Sweet local adventure into Sarawak’s palm sugar traditions.
Want to see a truly local side of Kuching that most travellers miss? This private 2-hour experience takes you deep into Sarawak’s mangroves to discover how locals turn wild nipah palm sap into gula apong – Sarawak’s version of palm sugar. You’ll visit a small orchard owned by a husband-and-wife duo, where you’ll not only watch the sugar-making process but also get treated to fresh gula apong snacks made by the wife herself. It’s a rare glimpse into village life and a sweet slice of Sarawak you won’t find anywhere else.Gula apong is more than just a sweetener here – it’s part of Sarawak's culinary identity and a key source of income for many coastal families. Unlike the more commonly known gula melaka (which is made from coconut palm), gula apong has a smoky-caramel flavour that comes from the nipah palm, a plant that grows naturally in Sarawak’s mangrove swamps. It’s sustainable, full of heritage, and absolutely delicious. This is perfect for travellers who want to go beyond touristy experiences and get hands-on with local traditions. If you care about sustainability, love learning about food culture, or are just curious about how people live off the land in Sarawak, this one’s for you. What to ExpectVisit a community-run nipah orchard and watch how nipah sap is tapped traditionallySee how gula apong (Sarawak palm sugar) is made from raw sapEnjoy delicious homemade snacks featuring gula apong, freshly prepared by a local villagerLearn about the cultural and economic importance of gula apong in SarawakIncludes hotel pick-up and drop-off from Kuching for a hassle-free outingGood to KnowThis is a private experience – so it’ll just be you and your group, no large crowdsPerfect for families, food lovers, and culturally curious travellersNo physical fitness level required – the walk is short and easyRain or shine, the experience still runs – so bring an umbrella or raincoat, just in case

Tanoti House is a Sarawak-based craft atelier that brings together tradition, community, and purpose. The team works closely with over 600 artisans—many of them indigenous women—across villages in Sarawak and Sabah, helping to keep traditional weaving and beadwork alive. Tanoti doesn’t just produce beautiful handmade pieces; it also runs workshops, organises cultural events, and provides practical support like humanitarian aid and mask-making during tough times. Jacqueline’s approach is hands-on and thoughtful, always focusing on the people behind the craft.
