If you want to understand Borneo culture, start with weaving
If you really want to understand indigenous culture in Borneo, it starts with weaving. Before colonial times, life happened on a mat — this is where families gathered, meals were shared, and decisions were made. Weaving isn’t just craft here, it’s part of daily life, and it carries these stories and traditions. In this 2-hour session, you’ll learn basketry or songket directly from indigenous weavers, many from rural villages. You’ll first see them at work, then try it yourself. These skills are slowly disappearing as younger generations move on. By being here, you’re helping to support the artisans keeping this tradition alive — because when weaving is lost, so are the stories and culture it holds. This is a small experience, but an important one. It will give you a deeper understanding of Borneo than most tours. What to ExpectLearn directly from indigenous weaversChoose basketry or songket weavingCreate your own small pieceSee how weaving is done traditionallySmall, hands-on and easy to followGood to KnowYou can reach the craft house easily by Grab from Kuching cityNo prior experience is required—the weavers guide you step by stepChoose only one workshop per session: basketry or songket weavingAll materials are provided, and you take your mini creation homeYour participation directly supports rural women and helps sustain traditional crafts

Meet your host

Tanoti House is a Sarawak-based craft atelier that brings together tradition, community, and purpose. The team works closely with over 600 artisans—many of them indigenous women—across villages in Sarawak and Sabah, helping to keep traditional weaving and beadwork alive. Tanoti doesn’t just produce beautiful handmade pieces; it also runs workshops, organises cultural events, and provides practical support like humanitarian aid and mask-making during tough times. Jacqueline’s approach is hands-on and thoughtful, always focusing on the people behind the craft. Through Tanoti, she’s created a space where heritage skills are respected, and communities are genuinely supported.
