Smell, taste & roast Yunnan coffee with expert brewers in a beautiful space
If you love coffee, this coffee omakase and roasting experience is a must-do in Lijiang. Tucked away on the outskirts of the city, it takes place in a beautiful family-run café and roastery surrounded by an outdoor garden that feels worlds away from the crowds of the old town. What makes this experience truly special is the family behind it. Phoebe's family has been in coffee since 1993. Her parents started out growing commercial coffee, before becoming some of the first producers in Yunnan to make the leap into specialty coffee — choosing to focus on quality over quantity, and on bringing out the unique character of each region. Today, their work is part of Yunnan’s growing recognition as China’s leading coffee-producing region. There are three parts to this coffee experience - smelling, tasting and roasting.SmellingIt begins with a short introduction to Yunnan coffee, where Phoebe shares how different regions in Yunnan produces beans with completely different flavour profiles. You'll then smell these different beans from across Yunnan to experience those differences for yourself.TastingNext comes the coffee tasting, where you'll pick three different beans, each brewed to bring out the unique personality of the bean. They have homemade seasonal bites for you to enjoy as well.RoastingFinally, you'll pick your favourite coffee from the tasting and roast it by hand — the old-school way. You'll shake the beans over a simple coil heater until they pop like popcorn. Phoebe's dad isn't convinced by all the fancy roasting machines with their graphs and settings. He believes if you really want to understand coffee, you should first learn to roast it by hand. At the end, you'll pack your freshly roasted beans into a bag, write your name on it and bring it home.Phoebe is fluent in English — she lived in the US for three years — so feel free to ask her anything! She's incredibly knowledgeable about coffee and is always happy to share stories about Yunnan coffee, her family's journey, and answer any questions you have. What to ExpectLearn about Yunnan's coffee industry from a local coffee farming family, including how coffee is grown, processed and produced.Taste a selection of Yunnan coffees brewed using different methods to highlight the characteristics of each bean.Compare how origin, processing and roast influence the final cup.Enjoy homemade cookies and cakes during the tasting session.Select your preferred beans and take part in a guided hand-roasting session.Roast coffee from green bean to finished roast and pack it to take home.Good to KnowNo prior coffee knowledge is required. Beginners and coffee enthusiasts are both welcome. The experience takes place at Baisha Old Town.Guests will bring home a packet of coffee they roast themselves during the workshop.

Meet your host
Phoebe's family has been in coffee since 1993 — long before Yunnan coffee was cool. Her parents started out growing commercial coffee before becoming some of the first producers in Yunnan to make the leap into specialty coffee — choosing to focus on quality over quantity, and on bringing out the unique character of each region. Today, they're part of the reason Yunnan is gaining recognition as China's leading coffee-producing region.
Phoebe herself spent six years in Seattle, where she worked as a barista to pay her tuition and ended up managing three cafes there. She came home to Lijiang to help with her family's specialty coffee dream. Her dad oversees all the roasting, her mum trains baristas from all over China, and Phoebe brings it all together as your host. She's warm, fluent in English, and genuinely one of our favourite people to talk coffee with — the more questions you ask, the more she gets excited to share!
From their family-run workshop in Lijiang, they share coffees sourced from different parts of Yunnan, giving guests a clearer sense of just how varied the region’s coffee can be. It’s a thoughtful introduction to one of China’s key coffee-growing areas, shaped by real hands-on experience at every stage.
