Lombok village tour led by local women revealing real traditions and culture
Get a rare glimpse into a side of Lombok few travellers ever see. This short private trip takes you to a traditional village in the north of the island, where ancient Sasak customs are still part of daily life. You’ll visit Lombok’s oldest mosque, still actively used by the community during major celebrations such as Eid al-Fitr and reflecting the island’s unique blend of Islam and indigenous beliefs. You’ll also meet local women who continue the tradition of hand weaving using natural dyes and techniques passed down through generations. In the past, every young woman was expected to master weaving before she could marry — a tradition that has largely faded today. The local weaver there is actively trying to preserve this knowledge by teaching natural dyeing and welcoming young girls to learn weaving after school.Unlike other tours that can feel staged, this experience is guided by women who are part of the first women-led guide community in the area. It’s ideal for curious travellers seeking a genuine connection with local life and a meaningful way to support women, living traditions, and small-scale community initiatives. What to ExpectPrivate trip led by local women guide, offering real insights into daily life in the villageVisit to Masjid Kuno Bayan Beleq – Lombok’s oldest mosque, rich in heritageUp-close look at traditional hand-weaving techniques using natural dyes like indigoOpportunity to chat with weavers and see rare Sasak textile patterns being madeIncludes transport from Senaru and back, plus entrance fees and community contributions. Katni is a force of nature. She is the very first woman guide in Rinjani. When she first started guiding in Rinjani, it was taboo for women to lead hikes in the deeply patriarchal society of Lombok. So she started her own guiding business (still the only female-owned business in Rinjani!), and hired women as guides. Through her work, she's singlehandedly shattered taboos in Rinjani, changed mindsets of men and women in Lombok, and have given women opportunities to earn an income.
