Still fully inhabited, the village preserves original wooden houses with thatched roofs and communal living spaces where ancient Sasak customs remain part of daily life. Guided by a local woman, you will gain insight into Sasak traditions, marriage customs, and everyday life, while learning how villagers sustain themselves through farming rice, spices, cacao, coffee, cloves, and vanilla. You will also get to visit Lombok’s oldest mosque, still actively used by the community during major celebrations such as Eid al-Fitr and reflecting the island’s unique blend of Islam and indigenous beliefs.If the village and mosque reveal the rhythm of community and faith, the women of the village carry its cultural legacy forward. Katni is a force of nature. She is the very first woman guide in Rinjani. When she first started guiding in Rinjani, it was taboo for women to lead hikes in the deeply patriarchal society of Lombok. So she started her own guiding business (still the only female-owned business in Rinjani!), and hired women as guides. Through her work, she's singlehandedly shattered taboos in Rinjani, changed mindsets of men and women in Lombok, and have given women opportunities to earn an income.
