Cruise down the river spotting orangutans and visit Pangkalanbun for the history
This 3-day orangutan and culture combo is perfect for travellers who don’t want to choose between seeing Borneo’s iconic wildlife and experiencing its culture. It combines a classic 3D2N klotok (houseboat) cruise deep into the rainforest with an extra experience discovering the unique culture of Pangkalan Bun — guided by a local who brings history and everyday life to the forefront with warmth and insight. While most orangutan tours end at the river, this one goes further. After your jungle adventure, you’ll explore the heritage of the royal Sultanate with a visit to Istana Kuning (Yellow Palace), once the seat of the Pangkalan Bun sultanate. Then step into the world of the Dayak people, Borneo’s indigenous tribes, through visits to authentic and reconstructed Dayak longhouses. Learn how these resilient forest-dwelling communities live, hunt, and preserve their rich traditions in modern times — stories rarely found in guidebooks.Drift through the Arut River by canoe, explore a vibrant local market, and visit a floating mosque — all led by your guide who shares not just facts, but living memories and legends passed down through generations. This slower, more thoughtful kind of adventure is perfect if you want to understand Kalimantan, not just tick off the sights. What to Expect3D2N klotok cruise through Tanjung Puting including orangutan feeding stations at Tanjung Harapan, Pondok Tanggui and Camp LeakeyDaily wildlife cruises — see proboscis monkeys, birds, and possibly even wild orangutansOptional firefly watching and a guided night trek in the jungleCooking demos on board the boat to learn local recipesAn immersive cultural day in Pangkalan Bun — visit historic palaces, markets and a floating mosqueGuided canoe ride down the Arut River to see everyday life unfold along the waterLed by a warm, knowledgeable guide who shares personal stories and local legendsGood to KnowThis is a private trip, so you won’t be grouped with other travellersAll meals on the boat are covered, but lunch on the cultural day is at your own expenseExpect basic but comfortable facilities on the boat (mattress, fan, mosquito net)The jungle treks are easy-going and suitable for beginners, but do bring insect repellent and light long clothes, leech socks are recommendedThe cultural day does involve a bit of walking and getting in/out of canoes — nothing strenuous, but wear comfy shoes and clothesAlthough this company works with a lot of women guides, male guides may also be leading your trip, especially during high season (June - August). Meet your host
Siti Nurul has been welcoming travellers to Indonesia since a long time, offering thoughtfully designed trips that highlight the country’s natural beauty and cultural richness. Originally from East Java, she now calls Kumai home—a quiet town surrounded by rainforest where she raises her family and runs her tours. Siti started out guiding visitors through the jungles of Tanjung Puting and learned from one of the region’s most experienced guides. She's one of the few female guides in the area and proud to run the first women-owned tour company in Kumai. Beyond guiding, she teaches English locally and supports women in tourism. With Siti, you’re not just seeing Indonesia—you’re connecting with it on a deeper, more personal level.
