Immerse in slow travel and take the time to see orangutans in the wild
This 4-day, 3-night Orangutan houseboat tour takes you deep into the heart of Tanjung Puting National Park — but at a slower, more meaningful pace than most. Unlike the typical 3D2N route that rushes through feeding stations with a crowd of boats, this one gives you the space to linger, catch quieter wildlife moments, and really get to know the rhythm of the river. It's more than just orangutan spotting — it's about taking it slow and soaking in the jungle life.
If you're the type of traveller who wants fewer crowds, more wildlife, and time to just breathe, this is for you. The extra day allows you to visit the popular orangutan camps like Camp Leakey at off-peak times, which means fewer tourists and more peaceful wildlife encounters. Plus, you'll have plenty of river time for birdwatching, surprise monkey sightings, and maybe even glimpsing a wild orangutan swinging overhead all on its own.
You'll also get to visit Yayorin (Yayasan Orangutan Indonesia), a local nonprofit that protects the forest and the orangutans by working directly with nearby communities. It’s a special chance to see real conservation work in progress — from school programmes and forest education to supporting eco-friendly income for villagers. You might catch them planting trees, running kids’ nature classes, or sharing how they help locals protect their environment.
Perfect for nature-lovers, photographers, and slow travellers who want more than just a highlight reel — this is a true jungle immersion, not a checklist. You’ll get to enjoy intimate moments with the forest, learn from an experienced local guide, and fall asleep each night to the sounds of the jungle… all from the comfort of your traditional klotok boat.
What to Expect
Visit 3 orangutan feeding camps: Tanjung Harapan, Pondok Tanggui, and Camp Leakey
Explore quieter river stretches with more chances to spot rare birds, monkeys, and wild orangutans
Experience jungle life by day and night — enjoy firefly sightings, night walks, and early morning wildlife tours
Flexible itinerary on Day 3 for forest trekking, a village visit, or just relaxing on deck
Visit Yayorin, a local NGO working to protect orangutans and support communities
Fully inclusive: meals, private houseboat, guide, entrance fees, and transfers
Friendly local crew including guide, captain, cook, and assistant
All meals are freshly cooked onboard — you'll be well-fed from breakfast through dinner daily
Pick-up and drop-off at Kumai Port included — they'll coordinate with your hotel/airport
Good to Know
This is a private trip — just you, your crew, and the jungle
Expect to spend a fair amount of time on the river — great for reading, relaxing, or wildlife watching
The forest trails are generally flat and suitable for most fitness levels, though sturdy shoes are a good idea, plus there are leeches, so best to pack some leech socks and closed toe shoes
Camp visits and wildlife encounters are dependent on local conditions and may vary slightly
Swimming is not allowed in Tanjung Puting, but there’s a swimmable river near Pangkalan Bun. Your guide can take you there after the tour, depending on your flight time and with possible extra cost
Amenities/facilities
Traditional klotok with mattress, mosquito net, toilet, and shower
Comfortable, simple sleeping setup under a covered deck (with jungle soundtrack!)
Room options: Private room with ensuite bathroom available, plus shared common spaces
