See orangutans in the wild & live with the protectors of the land
Seeing orangutans in the wild is an amazing bucket list experience, but if that’s all you do, you’re only scratching the surface of what Kalimantan has to offer. This rare 5D5N trip gives you the classic orangutan houseboat experience, then goes far deeper to connect directly with the people protecting the forest. After 2 days of cruising along the Sekonyer river to see orangutans in their natural habitat, you'll head inland to live alongside the Dayak people - Indigenous forest guardians who have lived in harmony with the jungle for generations. You’ll meet the Dayak Tomun, one of the sub-tribes still living traditionally in Central Kalimantan’s remote highlands. They’ve turned down palm oil companies and have chosen to protect their land, rather than selling it for profit. You’ll stay in their communal longhouse, be welcomed with traditional music and rituals, and trek alongside village guides who’ll show you how they use plants for medicine, food, and survival in the rainforest. If you want to understand the deep local context and see how it all connects to the forest and the orangutans, this is the trip for you. What to ExpectWatch orangutans swinging through the jungle on a private klotok river cruise in Tanjung PutingVisit Camp Leakey and Pondok Tanggui – key feeding stations in the national parkTravel to Kudangan village, a remote Dayak community rarely seen by outsidersStay in a traditional longhouse and experience Dayak ceremonies, music, and daily lifeTrek with Dayak forest guides to waterfalls, wild orchards, and hidden jungle pathsCamp in the rainforest, eat food cooked in bamboo, and swap stories over the campfireLearn how the Dayak have protected their land and live entirely from the forestGood to KnowThis goes well beyond a regular boat tour - expect cultural immersion, trekking, and rustic livingFacilities are basic but comfortable – shared spaces, forest showers, and mats for sleepingNo signal or Wi-Fi in the village or jungle - perfect for a total disconnectTrek length can be adjusted to suit your fitness level and adventure appetiteYou’ll be hosted by locals who truly live what they share – nothing is staged or for showYour visit supports a community actively working to protect the forest and their way of lifeAmenities/facilitiesPrivate klotok boat with mattress, mosquito net, simple toilet & showerOvernight in a traditional Dayak longhouse (shared sleeping area)Jungle camping equipment provided – basic tents and matsHotel stay in Pangkalan Bun on your final nightAll meals provided from Day 1 lunch to Day 5 dinnerPrivate tours and transfers – including airport pickup and jungle transport

Meet your host

Yomie Kamale is a high school teacher, licensed guide, and long-time host based in Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan. For over ten years, he’s been welcoming travellers to explore the rainforest and wildlife of Tanjung Puting. Yomie runs riverboat tours that are as much about learning and connection as they are about adventure — from spotting orangutans to meeting local communities. He works closely with a small local crew and ensures every guest plants a tree as part of a growing reforestation effort. Kind yet firm, Yomie’s also involved in community work, guiding new tour operators, and advising on eco-tourism issues. He genuinely cares — about the forest, the people, and the stories shared along the way.
