Trek rice paddies in Sapa like a local
In this 1 day private Sapa trek and lunch option, you will embark on a trek led by a Hmong guide through rolling rice fields from Sapa Town to Hau Thao village. This experience offers a unique opportunity to walk the same path that the Hmong people, like Zizi, used to hike to Sapa market in the old times. Along the way, you will be able to admire the stunning views of the main villages and rice paddies, while your English-speaking Hmong guide shares the story of this path, the village life, and the Hmong culture. What to ExpectPrivate, nature-focused Hmong trek through scenic rice fieldsA knowledgeable, English-speaking Hmong guide sharing light cultural insights along the wayA visit to Hau Thao village, where Zizi’s family livesA chance to enjoy a delicious Hmong-style lunch and learn about traditional Hmong cuisineReturn to Sapa Town by car in the late afternoon or evening, depending on your chosen optionNote: This experience is more nature-focused with light cultural insights along the way. If you’re looking for a deeper, culture-focused experience, we recommend booking Zizi’s other tour, Hmong Indigo Dyeing and Village Traditions, which includes hands-on indigo dyeing and more in-depth sharing about Hmong traditions.NotesThis is an easy 12km trek, suitable for most beginners. The trek is suitable for children, but it does depend on each child’s physical ability. While most kids can manage it, the path can be a bit slippery at times. We recommend that parents use their discretion, especially for children under 8 years old, when deciding if they should join.If you need anything during the trek, just let your guide know! They’ll do their best to help and make sure you're comfortable along the way. From time to time, local sellers may approach you along the route. Unfortunately, this kind of persistent selling has become quite common in Sapa as tourism grows, and it can feel uncomfortable. The best way to handle this is to politely and firmly say no and keep walking if you’re not interested.Optional: If you wish, you can also opt to spend more time in the village and enjoy a traditional, home-cooked dinner prepared by Zizi’s family, shared family-style with other guests at the homestay (available as an add-on), before returning to Sapa by car later in the evening.

Zizi and Lilly started their homestay in 2016, creating a welcoming place for travellers while also supporting their local community. Zizi’s family once relied on rice farming, but tourism helped improve their lives, allowing them to upgrade from bamboo to wooden houses. Their journey hasn’t been easy—during COVID, they lost both their business and home to a fire. But through determination and the support of visitors, they rebuilt step by step. Today, their homestay is one of the most loved in Sapa. They hire local guides and run their place as a social enterprise, giving others in the community a chance at a better life.
