Tibetan valley life, pastoral culture, picnic and mountain dinner
This is the Shangri-La many travellers come searching for: wide-open valleys, grazing yaks, traditional Tibetan villages, and mountain views in every direction. Just less than an hour outside town lies Ringha Valley, a landscape of barley fields, grazing yaks, winding rivers, and traditional Tibetan villages set against a backdrop of mountains. While many visitors stay within the old town, Ringha offers a glimpse into the slower, pastoral way of life that continues to shape this region today.Rather than simply passing through, you'll spend the day walking village trails and open grasslands, visiting Tibetan homes and a local temple while learning about the customs, architecture, and daily rhythms of life in the highlands. Along the way, you'll also discover how the wider Tea Horse Road heritage helped shape the culture of this region. The day ends at Ferme Liotard, a restored Tibetan farmhouse where you'll enjoy a French-inspired 3-course dinner made with local ingredients from the valley. The result is a thoughtful blend of Tibetan hospitality, mountain produce, and French culinary influence. What to Expect• Guided walk through Ringha Valley, one of the most scenic pastoral landscapes near Shangri-La• Trek through barley fields, rivers, open grasslands, and traditional Tibetan villages• Learn about Tibetan culture, architecture, farming, and everyday life in the highlands• Visit a local temple that continues to play an important role in the community• Picnic lunch surrounded by mountain scenery• Visit traditional Tibetan homes and gain insights into village life• Enjoy a French-inspired 3-course dinner at the restored Ferme Liotard farmhouse• Stunning views of grazing yaks, mountain valleys, and wide-open Tibetan landscapes throughout the dayGood to Know• Moderate walking is involved on village trails and uneven terrain• Comfortable walking shoes are recommended• Weather in Shangri-La can change quickly, so warm layers and sun protection are recommended• The experience takes place at altitude, approximately 3,200m above sea level

Mission Liotard is based in Shangri-La, in the northwest of Yunnan Province, near the border with Tibet. The area sits on the edge of the Himalayas and is known for its high-altitude landscapes and strong Tibetan cultural influence. Founded in 2010 by French writer and traveller Constantin de Slizewicz, the project grew out of his time exploring this remote region and the historic expedition routes that pass through it.
The idea behind Mission Liotard is to share this landscape in a way that respects both the environment and local communities, while supporting the development of people living in these high-altitude valleys.
The experiences are inspired by the old Tea Horse caravan routes, combining real outdoor exploration with a level of comfort in the wild. Each journey is supported by a mule caravan carrying supplies, making it possible to enjoy well-prepared meals and a comfortable camp even at high altitudes, while staying closely connected to the natural surroundings and local culture.
