A hands-on food journey into Cantonese fish traditions 🐟
Fish has long been at the heart of life in Singapore - from bustling wet markets to family tables and celebratory meals. This immersive experience uses the lens of Cantonese cuisine to explore how seafood has shaped the way many Singaporeans shop, cook, and eat.Set in Chinatown Complex, one of the city’s most vibrant wet markets, you’ll go beyond a typical food tour to trace the journey of fish from live market tanks to dried seafood shops to the hawker plate. Along the way, you’ll learn how to identify key ingredients, understand their role in Cantonese cooking, and see how both fresh and preserved seafood continue to influence everyday meals. The experience continues at Hong Lim Market & Food Centre, where you’ll meet a fourth-generation hawker and discover the traditions behind Cantonese-style tze char before helping prepare and enjoy a lunch centred around snakehead fish.Part market tour, part cultural deep dive, and part hands-on cooking session, this experience offers a richer understanding of Singapore’s food heritage and the enduring role fish plays in bringing people to the table. What to ExpectWalk through Chinatown Complex wet market to see live fish stalls and dried seafood ingredientsLearn how fish is used in Cantonese soups and everyday cookingVisit Hong Lim Complex for an introduction to Cantonese-style tze charMeet a fourth-generation hawker and hear about local hawker food traditionsHelp cook and eat a lunch featuring snakehead fishGood to KnowDo message your host prior to the experience if you have any dietary requirementsLunch won't be served till around 11am, so do come sufficiently filled till then

Meet your host
The team behind this experience started it in 2025 after years working in conservation at WWF Singapore. The idea came during a trip through Cambodia and Vietnam, where busy seafood markets reminded them of childhood visits to Singapore’s wet markets with their families — something they felt was quietly disappearing. Today, they help people understand where their seafood comes from, why traceability matters, and how everyday choices affect marine life. Their work also supports Singapore’s wet markets, fish farms and fishing village heritage, with the hope of keeping both local food traditions and marine ecosystems alive.
