See Singapore’s disappearing kelongs and fish farms by boat
This is a side of Singapore most people never see. Long before the container terminals and financial district, our coastline was dotted with kelongs—wooden fishing structures built on stilts, around which entire communities and livelihoods grew.On this three-hour speedboat journey, you’ll travel through Singapore’s eastern waters to see some of the kelongs that remain. Along the way, your guide will share how traditional fishing worked, why so few kelongs are left and how our coastline and fish-farming industry have changed. You’ll see old-school kelongs and modern fish farms on the same route, bringing Singapore’s fishing past and present into view side by side. There’ll also be time to stop at a floating restaurant, enjoy the sea breeze and play old-school games such as Carrom or Jenga.A question to take with you: What can our disappearing kelongs teach us about food security, ocean culture and Singapore’s changing relationship with the sea?Impact Week 2026 Learning JourneyThis experience has been specially curated for Impact Week 2026 and will take place only on 12 September. These Learning Journeys take you beyond the surface to better understand people, places and issues in Singapore, and hopefully inspire us to protect what matters. Why This Experience MattersFor generations, kelongs provided food, work and a close connection to the sea. Today, only a handful remain, as Singapore’s coastline and fishing industry have transformed around them. This isn’t just about looking back. For an island nation with limited land, food security remains a very real question. Seeing traditional kelongs alongside modern fish farms invites us to think about where our food comes from, what place-based knowledge we may be losing and how we might design more resilient food systems for the future. What to ExpectThree-hour speedboat journey through Singapore’s eastern watersSee traditional kelongs and modern fish farms on the same tripLearn how Singapore’s fishing industry and coastline have changedLook out for islands, coastal wildlife and unfamiliar views of the mainlandStop at a floating restaurant to relax and play traditional gamesLicensed guide, boat captain and ponchos includedGood to KnowSuitable for children aged three and aboveThis is a sightseeing and heritage experience, not a fishing activityA safety briefing will be conducted before departureLife jackets are available on boardFood and drinks are not included
