A rare behind-the-scenes look at how conservationists are saving our oceans
[Only on 28 Feb 2026] This is a rare chance to see the full picture of ocean conservation. Most of us only see one small part of the plastic problem, because most of the waste from Singapore doesn’t stay here - it affects nearby coastal communities instead. This experience shows what usually stays hidden - how everyday waste affects local communities, how it reaches the ocean, and what actually helps stop it.This experience takes place in Batam (ferry tickets included!), where you'll spend the day with the conservationists from Seven Clean Seas. You’ll see plastic pollution through the eyes of the communities it affects most, and learn how the plastics problem can be tackled as a whole - not just a tiny part of it.Seven Clean Seas' approach to plastics is a holistic one. They don't just stop at clean-ups. They work with local communities to collect plastic, sort it properly, and turn it into useful materials. This creates jobs and keeps plastic out of the ocean for the long term.During the experience, you’ll follow plastic through its real journey - from polluted shores, to sorting facilities, to being transformed into something useful for the community. You’ll see how people earn a living through this work, and how long-term solutions are built on the ground. This isn’t about “saving the ocean for a day”. It’s about supporting work that lasts. You’ll leave thinking differently about waste, consumption, and our role in all of it.What to ExpectRound-trip ferry from Singapore to Batam and all transport within Batam includedHands-on beach clean-up at a heavily polluted coastal areaVisit to the Tanjung Uma community. See how plastic waste affects local communities, and how the waste can be transformed into something useful like recycled roofing.Guided tour of the Materials Recovery Facility, where you’ll help sort and process the collected wasteMeaningful conversations about sustainability and waste with local change makersA hearty local lunch buffet at a nearby restaurantGood to KnowVisa or immigration fees for Batam are not included – please check entry requirements based on your nationalityDo fill up the Indonesia Arrival Card at least 3 days before the tourExpect to get a bit dirty during the clean-up and recycling. Wear long pants, a comfortable t-shirt and closed shoesSuitable for ages 3 and upThe beach clean-up and MRF visit involve light physical effort (walking, bending, sorting waste), but nothing too demanding— Seek Sophie SG Exclusives: Singapore on the Wild SideAs 2026 kicks off, this exclusive series is our invitation to slow down and look closer. Meet your host
Seven Clean Seas started with one moment that changed everything. While on holiday, founder Tom Peacock-Nazil watched a beautiful beach disappear under plastic after a storm, and realised how little most of us see of the problem. What began as weekend clean-ups soon became a full-time mission: to remove plastic from the ocean in a way that actually lasts. Today, Seven Clean Seas doesn’t just clean beaches. They build real waste systems, create proper jobs for people on the frontlines, and turn plastic into useful materials for local communities. Their goal is simple but ambitious: keep plastic out of the ocean for good - by fixing the system, not just the symptoms.
