Kayak mangroves in Pulau Ubin, hike and see a wilder side of Singapore
Pulau Ubin is less than two kilometres from mainland Singapore, but it feels like a completely different world. This is a lovely way to slow down, get out into nature and see a wilder side of Singapore that still remains. You’ll kayak through Ubin’s peaceful mangroves, look out for wildlife and then hike up Puaka Hill, the island’s highest point. From the top, you’ll see the mangroves below and Singapore’s skyline in the distance—a striking contrast between our natural coastline and the city it became.Southeast Asia is home to more mangroves than anywhere else in the world, but many are disappearing. This journey is a chance to experience one of these living coastal ecosystems for yourself, and think about what it might take to protect—and perhaps restore—more of them.A question to take with you: What could Singapore’s relationship with the sea look like if we made more space for nature?Impact Week 2026 Learning JourneyThis experience has been specially curated for Impact Week 2026 and will take place only on 12 September. These Learning Journeys take you beyond the surface to better understand people, places and issues in Singapore, and hopefully inspire us to protect what matters. Why This Experience MattersMangroves are one of nature’s hardest-working ecosystems. They support wildlife, protect coastlines from erosion and help store carbon—but across Southeast Asia, many are disappearing as coastlines are developed and reclaimed.Pulau Ubin gives us a chance to move through one of Singapore’s remaining natural coastal systems. Seeing its mangroves with the city skyline in the distance makes the contrast especially striking—and reminds us how much we still have left to protect. What to ExpectKayak through Pulau Ubin’s mangroves and look out for wildlifeTake a short hike up Puaka Hill for panoramic viewsSee Singapore’s natural and reclaimed coastlines from a different perspectiveBeginner-friendly, with life jackets and safety equipment providedGood to KnowNo previous kayaking experience is neededSuitable for children aged four and above with parental supervisionOpen double kayaks are used; single kayaks may be provided for odd-numbered groupsExpect to get wet, so dress accordingly and bring a change of clothesRoutes may change if parts of Pulau Ubin are temporarily closedDogs are welcome if they can fit safely in the kayakPets must remain in an enclosed carrier while travelling on the bumboatThe bumboat fare to Pulau Ubin is not includedFrequently Asked QuestionsDo I need kayaking experience? Not at all!
