A Nat Geo–level Orangutan experience, with a secret Bromo sunrise.
[27 Apr - 2 May] This Seek Sophie Community Trip was inspired by one of the most life changing wildlife experiences ever - seeing wild orangutans ethically in Tanjung Puting. It was so special that we had to turn it into a Community Trip, upgraded with a Mt Bromo adventure and an eco-lodge stay.Tanjung Puting National Park is the world's capital of orangutans, and you'll get to spot them in wild. You'll be cruising along the river on a traditional houseboat - spotting orangutans, proboscis monkeys, hornbills and lots more wildlife. Your Seek Sophie guide Guh is amazing - he knows all the stories of all the orangutans - like how long the current alpha has been ruling an area and how you can see the scar on his bottom lip because of his battles. It's like watching a Nat Geo documentary come to life!We wanted you to get the best of both worlds in Tanjung Puting. Most trips only do the houseboat, which can feel a bit raw/basic. So we’ve added a couple of nights at a lovely eco-lodge to make things comfier for you. But of course, you can’t come all this way and skip the houseboat, so you’ll still spend one night on board. You’ll also get to give back to the orangutans by planting trees in the forest around the National Park.To make the trip even more special, we paired this Community Trip with Mt Bromo (domestic flights included!). Bromo is usually packed with tourists, but we’ve found a quieter, hidden viewpoint where you can stargaze before the crowds show up. And our favourite part: a picnic breakfast at a secret spot with Mt Batok rising in the background. This trip covers two locations in Indonesia - Mt Bromo in Java & Tanjung Puting in Borneo - and the price includes domestic flights, which we will be booking for you!Why We Created Community TripsWe always get told that Seek Sophie guests are different. They're more curious, more open-hearted and they want to see what's real, not something on show for tourists. We designed these community trips specially for you. These are once-off trips that show you the people and places we love when we’re on the ground. Many of them aren’t open to the public, and don’t even exist on our usual Seek Sophie experiences. These trips aren't for everyone. They're much more activity packed than any other trips out there. They’re for travellers who really want to see it all, go deeper, and experience the really special things that usually stay hidden. What Makes This Seek Sophie Community Trip Special?1. See Orangutans with Conservationists and Give Back Tanjung Puting National Park is home to the world’s largest population of 6,000 wild and semi-wild orangutans. It’s also where Borneo Foundation International (BFI), founded by primatologist Dr. Birute Galdikas, does orangutan research and conservation. Here, you'll see orangutans in the wild & hear their stories with local conservationists - while travelling on a river safari on a houseboat.Tanjung Puting also has a powerful story where locals pushing back against palm oil plantations so orangutans have more land to survive. On this trip, you’ll also get the rare chance to meet the community behind that effort and help with reforestation, which makes the experience especially meaningful.2. Best of both worlds: comfort + wildWe wanted you to get the best of both worlds in Tanjung Puting. Most trips only do the houseboat, which can feel a bit raw/basic. So we’ve added a couple of nights at a lovely eco-lodge to make things comfier for you. But of course, you can’t come all this way and skip the houseboat, so you’ll still spend one night on board. You’ll also get to give back to the orangutans by planting trees in the forest around the National Park. The houseboat is simple, no-frills, and there’s no WiFi, so you can really disconnect! When we're not at the feeding stations, our favourite thing to do is to chill on the deck and spot other wildlife as we slowly cruise down the river.3. Mt Bromo Without The CrowdsMt. Bromo is probably one of Indonesia's most famous volcanoes and it draws huge number of tourists every day. But we found a way to see it differently. This 4WD jeep ride takes you to a lesser-known view point with a secret breakfast picnic spot that's away from the crowds! And unlike the usual tours where you just get a driver, you’ll have a dedicated English-speaking local guide who knows all the stories behind Bromo. It's just a short flight away from Tanjung Puting, so we think it makes for the perfect stop!4. Adventure Without the StressYou'll be joined by a dedicated Seek Sophie team member and a local guide. We'll take care of all transfers, accommodation, most meals so you can just focus on being present!Accommodations (5 nights provided)All rooms are shared. We’ll group guests by the same gender.Comfy hotel in Bromo area (1st night)Stay in a charming mountain side hotel with all the modern amenities. Meet your host
Hi, we're Seek Sophie :) We created Community Trips because we’re always on the ground meeting cool people, hearing local stories, and stumbling onto hidden spots. At some point we thought: why not use all that insider knowledge to create the dream trip we’d show our own friends?
Think of Community Trips as a Seek Sophie omakase. We get to go a little wild with our ideas, bring you to places that aren’t usually open to the public, add the thoughtful touches we’ve always dreamt of, and make it feel genuinely special for you.
Every trip also gives back, so your adventure makes a direct impact on the communities and environments you visit.
We’ve loved crafting these trips for you, and we can’t wait to explore with you :)
