The Black Sampan
Firdaus is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich heritage of the Orang Laut community. His work began in 2020, when he set out to retell the stories of Pulau Semakau, where his maternal grandparents once lived before resettlement in 1977. Growing up, Firdaus visited the island and learned about their traditions, way of life, and deep connection to the sea.
Today, he carries on their legacy by sharing home-cooked meals prepared by his mother, Mdm Noorani, using ancestral recipes passed down through generations. Through storytelling, advocacy, and cultural experiences, he sheds light on the traditions, craftsmanship, cuisine, and spiritual practices of the Orang Laut people.
Beyond preserving heritage, Firdaus actively supports his community by advocating for the inclusion of indigenous voices in policymaking, ensuring their perspectives are recognised in decisions that impact their livelihoods and cultural heritage. He also works to support young descendants and former islanders who continue to feel the social and economic effects of resettlement. Through education and outreach, he hopes to foster a greater appreciation for Singapore’s coastal communities while ensuring their stories and traditions are not forgotten.
