You may take the train to Matara and then go by bus or tuk-tuk to Mirissa (which should be around 300 for a tuk-tuk and around 50 for the local bus). You can also hire a private car and driver from Colombo for a day - it will take approximately 2.5 hours

Do I need to go with a guide?

Yes, you'll need a guide to take you out on a boat to where the whales are. Ideally do choose a sustainable guide (like the one we have listed here), who cares about the welfare of the whales, and who ensures that the whale watching takes place at a comfortable distance for the whales.

Do I need to train up?

Nope. You only need to sit back and enjoy!
