Why These Cat Ba Cruises Made Our List
Most Cat Ba cruises are still very basic backpacker trips, often with big groups and boats that haven’t changed much in decades. We wanted to find boats that are more comfortable.
The cruises we picked have smaller groups and better boats. The overnight cruises here are nicer and newer than most other Cat Ba cruises, with differentiated itineraries. Day cruises are still simple, but usually less crowded and run by teams we trust. So you can enjoy Lan Ha Bay without feeling packed in.
How to Choose a Cat Ba Cruise
The main thing to decide is whether you want a day cruise or an overnight cruise.
A day cruise is enough to see the highlights of Lan Ha Bay if you’re short on time, but most day boats are quite basic and have very same-y itineraries.
If you can, we’d recommend an overnight cruise. The boats are usually more comfortable and the itineraries are more interesting, often including extras like cycling to Viet Hai Village or night kayaking to see glowing plankton.
Best Time to Go
Cat Ba is great year-round.
- The best months are April–June and September–November, when the weather is mild and perfect for kayaking, trekking and exploring the bay.
- July–August is hotter and busier as local travellers visit for summer holidays. Skip these months if you want a less crowded experience.
- December–March is cooler and quieter, with misty karst views and more peaceful vibes.
How to Avoid the Crowds
To avoid the crowds in Cat Ba, choose smaller boats rather than the big backpacker cruises, which often travel in large groups and follow the same busy routes.
Also, avoid the Vietnamese summer months (July–August)! This is when many local travellers visit Cat Ba for their holidays.
That said, Cat Ba is still much quieter than Ha Long Bay. You’ll typically see around a quarter of the number of boats, so even in busier periods it generally feels more relaxed.

Helpful Questions
Are there ATMs on Cat Ba?
Yes, there are ATMs in Cat Ba Town, the island’s main hub. That said, it’s a good idea to withdraw some Vietnamese Dong before arriving, especially if you plan to visit more remote parts of the island. Many smaller shops, boats and activities don’t accept cards, so having cash on hand is helpful.
Is there wifi on the cruise?
Not really! Once you head out into Lan Ha Bay on the cruise, signal is usually weak or disappears completely. Most cruises don’t have WiFi, so expect to be mostly offline while you’re on the boat. Great for a digital detox!
Is Cat Ba too crowded?
It can be in summer (July and Aug!). But even at its busiest, Cat Ba is much quieter than Halong Bay, with far fewer boats in the bay.
How far is Cat Ba from Hanoi?
Cat Ba is about a 3.5 hour bus ride from Hanoi which includes a ferry transfer to the island. There are several buses going daily from Hanoi to and from Cat Ba island.
Should I go to Cat Ba or Halong Bay?
It depends on your travel style and budget.
If you prefer a more relaxed, adventurous and budget-friendly trip, Cat Ba is a great choice. It sees far fewer visitors than Halong Bay (about a third as many), so the bay feels quieter. Boats are smaller and the vibe is a bit more backpacker, with activities like kayaking, rock climbing, caves and hiking.
If you’re looking for a more luxurious cruise, Halong Bay is better. Boats are bigger and often include spas, entertainment and other onboard facilities.
