3 Day Dive and Stay

My husband and I stayed at Angel Island for 6 nights on our honeymoon. By far the most expensive place we’ve ever stayed so we had high expectations.
 The resort is beautiful with a peaceful private beach. With only 10-12 lodges there the beach is never crowded and the sun beds are nicely spaced to make you feel it’s your own beach! The snorkelling off the beach is very pretty and free use of kayaks means you won’t be bored when you need a break from the sun bed.
 The food in the restaurant is amazing with a beautiful setting looking out over Komodo National Park. There is lots of choice so after 6 nights we weren’t getting bored at all with the options. The staff in the bar and restaurant couldn’t have been friendlier and were always available if you wanted drinks or snacks at any time of the day.
 Our only slight issue was when we tried to book some trips with them before we arrived; In the initial emails the manager was very non-committal and I had to push him to allow us to book in advance and then when we arrived there was confusion around when we could do the trips and mixed messages about start times.
 The trips once we were on them though were great and we did 2 days of diving and snorkelling (I dive, my husband snorkels) with them which was absolutely incredible! Please be aware if you’re a single diver they won’t take you if there aren’t other divers BUT there are companies in Labuan Bajo who will pick you up if you get there and there are no other divers.
 We were on the boat with the owner of the resort who also helps as a dive guide (which we thought was great) and we mentioned the confusion earlier in the week. She was really lovely and apologised saying she would speak to the staff to find out what happened. She gave us confidence that she wouldn’t let it happen again and hence we’ve given the place 5 stars still! Would recommend and would love to go back one day.

At any given time, we saw only a few other guests, such as at breakfast - even on the beach, we might see 1 or two other couples. We really liked that aspect, because it allowed us to rest and recharge from a very busy itinerary.
 The food is very nice, with a wide choice - we enjoyed everything we tried, and felt they must have an excellent kitchen staff. Everything is included except alcoholic drinks, which were not priced badly (cheaper than many places in Makassar, for example; 45,000 for a large Bintang, 70,000 for a rum and coke, etc)
 The rest of the staff was also wonderful, very warm, friendly, and helpful; and even before our visit, the manager, Denny, patiently answered all of our many questions.
 The house reef is really beautiful - it truly seems special as it was vibrant and flourishing, and had many fish I've rarely seen while snorkeling - I was eager to spend time each day of our stay getting in the reef and see what else would happen by, such as the dusk visits from a little stingray, often chased by an smaller black-tipped reef shark.
 The resort also operates a dive center; while I don't dive, my friend and I were able to go along on a dive and I was able to snorkel some great locations such as Manta Point (and I was lucky enough to see mantas - not always easy for a snorkeler).
 They have their own very well-maintained boats; while the price for taking one may seem high to some (around 2,500,000 in July 2019), we felt it was worth it in terms of safety and reliability, and we used this means to go to Rinca Island to see komodo dragons. We felt even better about this choice when we spent a little time in Labujan Bajo, where we saw many boats that didn't seem in such great condition.

Overall, this is one of the best resorts I've ever stayed at - I feel it offers better value than such places as the Conrad Maldives (where I've been among others), due to the privacy, the wonderful reef, the great staff and endless tasty food. That Conrad is nice, to be sure, but it simply couldn't provide the same sense of quiet bliss.
 The only very minor improvement I would suggest is to add a few single-person deeper-seat kayaks; what they have are either large 2-person kayaks (unwieldy for one person) or very shallow-draft single-person kayaks, which require very careful attention to balance at all times, which i find disrupts serenely coasting.

The resort is beautiful. Pick up and drop off at the airport went without a hitch, and the resort is a shortish boat ride from Labuan Bajo. We were welcomed and shown around the hotel and beach. The staff are all really friendly and accommodating. The room was huge, super clean (not even a cobweb on the very high pointed ceiling!) and well equipped. I'm no big fan of outdoor bathrooms, but it was very private. It was let down slightly by the fairly dim lighting. We had a couple of gaps in water provision while taking showers, but only for about 90 seconds at a time. The resort has a lot of eco touches such as using desalinated sea water. I thought this wouldn't be great for my hair but whatever the shampoo and conditioners supplied are (in reusable bottles), they are really fantastic! I enjoyed watching the birds flitting around the grounds - a few feeders to entice them closer tot he rooms would be a nice touch.

The menu was really varied, and for a vegetarian it was lovely to be able to sample some Indonesian dishes without meat. Alcohol is chargeable but reasonably priced. We were there in monsoon season so didn't end up swimming or snorkelling off the island as the sea was a bit choppy, and we were a little put off by the jellyfish. The public beach looked like it would have been calmer though. It was nice to see the fish darting around the reef off the main beach. It was sad to see how much rubbish washed up at low tide (no fault of the resort who did a great job of clearing it so it didn't return to the sea, as well as collecting driftwood and other bits washed up).

We took a trip to Rinca island to see the dragons which was an excellent day out. The trip prices seem high compared to what you'd likely get in Labuan Bajo but considering you get a boat with a staff of 3, and snorkelling at a spot without any other boats it was good value.

We arrived to a very warm welcome and instantly fell in love with this small paradise island. The rooms are spacious, spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The bed is huge, the outdoor bathroom luxurious and the fridge is well stocked.
 The beach is a short walk through lovely grounds and the view out to sea at the surrounding islands is stunning. There are nice sun loungers on the beach and we only saw 1 other couple on the beach during our 3 night stay. Picture pure white sand, blue sea, beautiful sunsets, distant islands and a cold beer and you've got it!
 The food was fantastic and all included and we never went hungry, we even had cakes brought round at 4pm. All of the staff were so friendly and helpful and it was great to meet Kate the owner. She made us feel so welcome and encouraged us to join a dive boat for a snorkelling trip, that was the best advice ever given to us! We went to an amazing spot that resembled an exotic fish tank, I have never seen so many fish and such a variety and of course the spectacular coral. Our guide was great, he looked after us ensuring we didn't hit any strong currents and pointed out so much that we would have otherwise missed. We then went on to Manta point and experienced our lifelong ambition to swim with these majestic creatures, what an experience that will stay with us forever.
 The house reef was also something to remember, just walking out knee high to an incredible variety of coral and marine life. We even saw black tipped reef sharks in the shallows and a small pod of dolphins out past the reef.
 We had absolutely no complaints and thoroughly enjoyed our stay just wishing that we had booked for longer. We didn't have enough time to fully immerse ourselves in island life and enjoy the beach, our room loungers, go kayaking or have a spa treatment and so will go back as soon as we can to enjoy paradise again. If you like peace, quiet, good service, excellent food and unforgettable dive/snorkel opportunities you will not be disappointed.

Paradise is a pretty personal concept - one size does not fit all. But you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere more idyllic than this small, charming boutique resort. Angel Island Eco Resort is on a small island about 30 minutes out from the bustling picaresque port of Labuan Bajo, Flores. As such it is well located - close enough to the best dive sites of Northern Komodo but blessed with sea breezes to give one a break from the dry heat of this, the eastern dry end of the Indonesian archipelago. The scenery is amazing - every horizon is a postcard of rugged volcanic islands perched above blue water, with small boats scurrying around. Often, fish will be seen jumping in the shallows while Sea Eagles wheel overhead. There were baby Black Tip Sharks just off the beach and some very good snorkelling down at the point off the restaurant, including a big school of small Trevally, Razor Fish and masses of reef species. The diving in Komodo is absolutely world class - not just the quantity of fish (which is off the scale) but the diversity of species is something I have not seen elsewhere. Yes, there are currents to contend with, but Angel Island's Dive crew were excellent - briefings were detailed and so informative that one had a clear idea of what to expect. We were very well looked after.
 The rooms are among the best we have stayed in - huge - around 50 square metres bedroom alone. Beautifully turned out in the local hexagonal design with rap-around views of the rainforest vegetation and a massive californian king size bed. Sadly, owing to prolonged drought, the island looks a bit parched at present, but there was still enough vegetation to provide some shade from the hot sun (for which we were grateful). The bathrooms are semi-outdoor and simply superbly designed - encircled by a stone wall and very private. The rooms are well scattered across the site and there is a sense of spaciousness to the resort. The air con works well and there is the bonus of a decent coffee machine that makes great coffee. A water cooler in each room, a big flatscreen TV (with movies on a USB stick) and a slot for SD cards (so you can check out how your photos are going...there was not one complaint about the rooms. I guess to be picky, there could be a reading lamp but otherwise - perfection.
 The staff are incredibly polite and hospitable - nothing is too much trouble for them. The resort is 'all inclusive' (which is new for us) and this means that you are invited (actually encouraged) to order food and beverages whenever you want! All soft drinks; shakes; juices are also included. We were quite well fed out on the dive boat for lunch, but got into the indulgent habit of a 'second lunch' back at the restaurant after we returned from the dives. The restaurant is the hub of the resort and is staffed all day - so is the kitchen. Anytime we walked past they would ask us if we wanted to order anything...so we obliged! The menu is extensive and we worked through it over the week we stayed. Pretty much all tastes are catered for and they will make food to order for any dietary requirements. As mentioned in another review, some local music or something a little more atmospheric than rock ballads of the 80s would be better to set the mood - there seemed to be variations of the one playlist each night. Still - not a big deal at all and conversation always flowed freely - so much to talk about after each day's diving.
 One of our favourite places to hangout was the library - just set a few metres back from the gorgeous beach with views across to Rinca Island. This is a thatch open-air hexagonal platform with bookshelvesin various languages and comfy chairs. We would often sit for an afternoon beer and even just listen to the waves gently laping on the beach; the birds rustling through the leaves and the fountains bubbling. It was so relaxing. And around 4:00 pm every afternoon Fredo would find us with afternoon tea - some freshly baked scones our cake! We found we were either diving, eating, or about to eat!
 The diving features intact hard coral reefs and some soft coral ledges and bommies. I dont think we have seen better fish life anywhere - the variety of fish of all sizes was most impressive. And the whole reef was buzzing with action - cleaner stations everywhere - schools of fusiliers being rounded up by Bluefin and Giant Trevally. Sweetlips of various species and masses of Moorish Idols; Angel Fish and Butterflyfish. We saw Mantas on three or four dives and Turltles on most - also quite a few White Tip Reef sharks and the odd Grey Reefie. Diving tends to be either as a drift dive (fun but challenging for photographers) or diving in the lee of large bommies and islands. You could see the current swirling at each end, but simply dived in the shelted lee. It is a little beyond novice skill level but nothing that someone with 40 dives or so couldn't handle. And the dive guides are very good at setting the scene and explaining the current limitations. We loved it and will return in September 2020 if not sooner!

Resort is small but great - 10 villa's, so max 20 residents and 40 staff - a ratio that is felt in the level of service.

Food is great - restaurant with à la carte choice for all meals. All freshly prepared, no waiting time, and delicious taste. Choice in various styles of food. It is a stunner, gorgeous large and VERY comfortable bungalows tucked discretely into the gardens, beautiful views from the beach out over the sea to the nearby islands, really attractive outbuildings and facilities on the property, very good snorkeling off the beach, tasty and varied food/menus and a friendly, welcoming and fun loving staff always poised to deliver outstanding service. We loved our five nights here and were always engaged, even without diving. The trip to Rinca was fun even though the "dragon" sightings were somewhat minimal.

Keeping in mind the island has zero population or facilities, the property had to be built piece by piece with men and materials brought in by boat, all the power is generated on site as is the drinking water, well I have to say Bravo Ernest and Kate, you have done something very special here, something we will not soon forget! PS Yes it is expensive by Indonesian standards but re read my review to better understand the real value and keep in mind it is a small fraction of what we would pay in the West, even if we could find it.

Pros:
 Our villa and the outdoor bathroom were huge! Bed was king sized, comfortable and the room had its own water cooler, which is a wonderful idea for a resort with limited water access. We didn't have to deal with small plastic water bottles or bother the staff to refill our glass bottles every day. Robes, slippers and great in-room coffee machine, too. Great water pressure - hot and cold on demand!

Clean - we found the entire resort to be very clean, though there are small particles of plastic you could see mixed within the sand at low tide. Unfortunately, we're seeing this more and more with different beaches we visit. Otherwise, the beach and the water were incredible.

Staff - very friendly, young Flores men who run and staff this resort. I'm not exaggerating when I say that we didn't see one female staff member the entire time we were there. We didn't find communication to be a huge issue, but when it was, the point and smile technique worked just fine!

Food - we found the menu to be fine. Breakfast was a bit basic, but the bruschetta and some of the other local fare was great and flavorful. I might suggest that they add more to their wine list, as we did find that to be limited. For Christmas Eve, they set up a buffet with fresh fish, salads and side dishes. Very good!

Wifi - for the remote location, we were really impressed with the wifi! Each room gets its own password and the signal was quite strong in the common areas as well.

Cons:

Food during off hours - meal times are set, and while the staff did bring a small snack around during the mid afternoon, there are no options if you're hungry between breakfast, lunch or dinner. Perhaps the owner would consider a small all-day snack menu for people to order from.

Beach service - if you're just relaxing at the beach and expect a waiter to come and serve you beer/food, lower your expectations. The staff are attentive, but will not go above and beyond to serve you.

Boat tour - we booked the Komodo National Park tour with the front desk and the tour was great, however the resort's boat was broken down the day we went so we had to take an alternate (MUCH SLOWER) boat to get around. It look nearly 2 hours to get from Angel Island to Rinca, which is apparently double the time it would take with a faster boat. It would have been nice as a good will effort to give us a discount on the tour. Also, please tell your tour guides that they should not be smoking on the tour boats or around the guests. There is ample time at each stop for them to have a smoke break, but it shouldn't be happening on a private tour.

Mosquitoes - I am half laughing as I write this as a con, as we were on a remote island but we found the mosquitoes to be a little out of control. They do a "smoke out" once a week, but there were days where we felt like we were getting eaten alive. Pack your bug spray!

Kayaks and snorkel gear - though adequate, the kayaks and the snorkel gear are all a little tired and could stand to be replaced.

The 10-villa resort is the only property on this private island and combines a restaurant, a small sea sports centre, a sala which doubles up as a library and lounge, plus plenty of open spaces for guests to get in touch with nature.

Kate, the owner is doing a wonderful job by bringing responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment and improving the welfare of local people. We were told she has a team of 40 working there and boy, did we love her hospitality team - from Pak Deney to Mos, Frito, Christian and everyone there - who saw to our every need and was always making sure we were well looked after. A special shout out to Kate and Sean for showing us a few extraordinary snorkeling spots where we spent hours with our heads submerged underwater looking at the abundant marine life of Komodo, swimming with schooling mantas, spotting baby sharks and Earth’s most ancient sea creature, the turtle. The world of Nemo and Dory is truly technicolor.

Staying on Angel Island and diving with them in Komodo National Park was a truly exceptionally, once-in-a-lifetime experience. This adorable private island has just 10 luxurious guest huts nestled among the trees and hibiscus bushes, so it's very peaceful and private. The reef at their main beach is truly spectacular (check out my photos - the one with the crazy looking mushroom coral was taken at the main reef right in front of the restaurant, which is super healthy). Just snorkeling there is magical - I swam beneath a rainbow while checking out curious turtles, a huge assortment of fish, an eye-popping array of colorful soft and hard coral, little black-tip reef sharks and small stingrays. And that was just the snorkeling.

This little resort is only a 30 minute boat ride from Labuan Bajo, but it feels like it's a million miles away. It's simply idyllic and nearly perfect in every way. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and air conditioned, the grounds and reefs around the island are pristine, the staff are all so friendly and kind, the food is lovely, and their diving tours are better than anything you can get in Labuan Bajo. It was the most perfect holiday we've ever had.

As for the dives in Komodo National Park - oh my God, they were absolutely stunning! To see my video compiling the highlights (which will blow your mind), just go to YouTube and search for "Cimeron Komodo." (I'd include a link but Tripadvisor won't allow that). These were the best dives of our lives. We couldn't believe how healthy and full of life the reefs, pinnacles and waters are in Komodo. And Kate - the co-owner of the resort and dive master - is an incredible dive master. The gear was all top-notch, and she chose 6 amazing dive spots for us, and she chose the times well so we could have the sites all to ourselves. Note that these are pretty advanced dives, as the currents are STRONG. We even did some crazy-cool current-chutes, which were really fun - it was like being shot out of a water cannon. We saw mantas, more turtles than I could count, swimming eels, big sharks, unbelievably colorful coral, pinnacles utterly covered with life...just watch the video and you'll see for yourself. It was a bit overwhelming to see so much life and color.

On our last day, the staff also arranged for a private tour to Rinca Island so we could see the Komodo dragons, which are insanely big! We even got to see a couple of the big boys fight (since it's mating season and they're trying to show the girl dragons how cool they are).

Booked 4 nights at this place on a whim and am very glad that I did! This place was absolutely wonderful - the island, accommodations, staff, and diving operation were all excellent.

We were met at the Komodo Airport by a member of the Angel Island team, and were taken to the harbor via taxi. The island is just a 15-20 min boat ride from Labuan Bajo - once you're on the island, however, you feel like you're in the middle of Komodo NP.

The island is very nice - two private beaches, a nice restaurant area, a yoga chalet/library, and ~10 cottages. The house reef is excellent for snorkeling - during a 20 minute snorkel, we saw baby blacktips, titan triggerfish, juvenile sweetlips, and lots of other beautiful creatures.

Each cottage is well hidden by trees, so you have a strong sense of privacy. Our cottage had excellent AC, a beautifully built bathroom with hot shower, a stocked mini fridge, and many other nice amenities.

The staff here is exceptional - Frido, Rian, Fian, Sian, and Denny were all extremely friendly and helpful. They learned our names immediately and were incredibly nice, always making conversation and going out of their way to help us.

The restaurant is decent - they have a large menu and great selection of drinks. I mostly ate Indian food, so I can't speak to the other dishes they offered, but all of my meals were pretty good. They also light mosquito coils under each table, so bugs were never a problem while dining.

What really surprised me, however, was the diving operation! Angel Island has one of the nicest dive boats I've ever encountered - huge deck space, freshwater shower, spacious bathroom, and tea/coffee on demand. The owner, Cate (or Kate, sorry!) was an excellent dive guide - she gave thorough briefings, kept things fun, and was amazing at finding beautiful creatures for us to look at. Like all of her staff, she was very friendly and helpful.

There are only two negatives that I can think of. One, the wifi didn't work 90% of the time. And two, we didn't see Bertie!!

Five days of total decadence! Big room with garden around the bathroom, dependable hot water and air conditioning -- we took our in-room espresso out to the balcony every morning to watch the birds. We spent most days basking on the beach, with staff asking every couple of hours what we'd like to drink, and bringing us fresh-baked snacks and desserts. The snorkelling was amazing, although the reef is so close to shore that we only went out at high tide to avoid kicking the coral! The day trip to Rinca to see the Komodo dragons had just as good snorkelling. And the sunsets from the dining room were spectacular!
 Our flight to Labuan Bajo was cancelled; we phoned from Denpasar (Bali), and the resort very kindly accommodated the change. We also had the chance to chat with the owner about his vision for the resort, both as eco-resort and as an economic opportunity and stimulus for the area.

We spent most days basking on the beach, with staff asking every couple of hours what we'd like to drink, and bringing us fresh-baked snacks and desserts. The snorkelling was amazing, although the reef is so close to shore that we only went out at high tide to avoid kicking the coral! The day trip to Rinca to see the Komodo dragons had just as good snorkelling. And the sunsets from the dining room were spectacular!
Our flight to Labuan Bajo was cancelled; we phoned from Denpasar (Bali), and the resort very kindly accommodated the change. We also had the chance to chat with the owner about his vision for the resort, both as eco-resort and as an economic opportunity and stimulus for the area.

This beautiful, small and private island resort has everything you could possibly ask for if you are looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday. The staff are friendly, efficient and helpful at all times. The rooms are amazingly comfortable and even the smallest details have not been overlooked. Someone has obviously spent a lot of effort and thought into the layout and it's facilities-I can't fault it. Food delicious and menu varied to suit all tastes. They organise trips to nearby Rinca to see the Komodo dragons and are well worth taking. The snorkelling from the private beach in front of the resort is excellent and although I didn't have time to dive, I have heard nothing but praise for the dive team. The coral and variety of fish - breathtaking. Well done all at Angel Island, if I can get back this way in the future I will mostly certainly stay here and cannot recommend it highly enough. Check it out for yourself!

Excellent place to stay to see Komodo National Park. The city of Labuan Bajo is a dump so this place located on a private island with clean water surrounding it is a perfect escape.

Location on the way to Komodo National Park makes it a perfect spot to experience the riches of the park.

Internet is good, the place is very clean and private. The staff is top notch. The food is excellent and included. There are no surprise costs. Everything is included except alcohol, diving, and tour to Komodo--- all of which are very reasonable and not much more expensive than other places in Indonesia. We felt that all of it was good value.

Owner lives on the island and speaks perfect English and Indonesian. He is a wealth of information and with only a few spacious luxury villas it is paradise.

This place is paradise. Based in the Komodo region, this private dive resort Island is just amazing.

With 10 rooms on the island, each private, you can feel as though you are here on your own. There is a beautiful house reef to snorkel off and dive trips heading out daily. You can also organise private trips (and if you want to share the experience they are happy to put it out there if any other guests are interested).

The rooms are very clean and tidy with a coffee pod machine that makes good coffee. There is an airconditioner for those that don't cope with the heat so well. The outdoor bathroom area is spacious and clean. The grounds are kept clean and tidy too.

The diving is phenomenal in this region but I suppose any google search would have already told you this. There is a dive master on site and you can book in to do a course, plan to do dives around Komodo, or house dives around the resort (day or night). The thing I loved the most was the effort put in to try and inspire divers to take another look at what is usually taken for granted. I also loved the way that dives were planned, to be enjoyed for as long as possible, not just over with to check it off the list.

The food is good. There is a really nice variety so you do not get tired of the same food all of the time. The menu includes fresh veggies which I imagine are hard to source, but really nice to be able to eat.

Overall we had a fabulous stay and hope to go back again. We visited on a full board deal which included dives and made everything easy (pay for own alcohol but all else included).

 So it is certain that we will come back, especially if Tristan, the dive instructor, is still there.
 He is very professional and his French language has helped us… And don’t worry as he speaks fluently English (and this is the default language on this island).
 You can even talk with the staff in English, despite what certain comments say…
 We can’t forget Ernest, one of the 2 owners of this island, who is very interesting with his great oceanic knowledge…. And we will never forget the long discussions we had with him.

So we stayed 9 days and that was really perfect to discover a maximum of dive sites with manta rays, turtles, sharks (as big stuffs) but also with so many little underwater things (thanks to our dive guides who showed us them) ^^

We also enjoyed a private boat to visit Rinca Island and saw the Komodo dragons !

Some other points :
 - there are many choices in the menu : pork / beef / fish / chicken / pasta / local Indonesian food…
 - We can enjoy a massage (with a blind guy) and that was not a problem… Perhaps, that would be a good idea for this resort to have a girl for the massage.
 -
 So you can go in this place, you won’t be disappointed, especially if you like to dive.
 Moreover, the pictures/photos on TripAdvisor are really very realistics.

Loved this place. It's a short boat ride from Labuanbajo to Angel Island and staff greet you on the beach to whisk you away to a secluded, chill resort. It was in-between busy seasons and they gave us a free upgrade to the larger villa. Such a wonderful space with a large patio, A/C and fan if needed, gorgeous private outside space for shower, toilet, and sink. I really liked the way the place worked seamlessly with nature. Very friendly staff. Do be aware that all the villas are off the beach but only 1-2 minute walk. I actually liked this b/c it reduced the impacts on the beach and with all the trash I saw elsewhere, this is a good thing. The house reef right off the beach was awesome for snorkeling. Not deep at all and lots of diversity with my faves being razorfish, lion fish, black-tipped reef shark, stingrays, and clownfish. Snorkeling gear was a bit, um, well-loved, and when we go back we will def'n bring our own masks. Free kayaks but it only takes 30 minutes or so to paddle around the island but well worth it. The staff will arrange trips to Komodo National Park. We went to RInca, which is 2 hours away instead of 4 and the dragons were unreal. We will definitely come back here!
