An epic journey to Sarawak's most iconic longhouse & rescued Orangutans
If you want a true Borneo explorer journey, this is it. Travel deep into the rainforest by longboat, see rescued orangutans, and stay in Sarawak's most iconic longhouse. This is raw, rustic, and beyond what many travellers see. Batang Ai is one of the most well-known Iban regions in Sarawak — not just because of the longhouses, but because of how remote and wild it feels getting there. The journey is part of the experience. You’ll travel through rural Sarawak, passing pepper farms, rice fields and small villages, stopping at a local market before continuing deep into the rainforest. The final stretch is by longboat — about an hour upriver — which makes arriving at the longhouse feel really special. You’ll stay overnight in a traditional Iban longhouse, where families still live together under one roof. It’s simple and a bit rustic, but that’s part of the experience. You’ll spend time on the ruai (shared verandah), share meals, try rice wine, watch (and join!) traditional dances, and learn about Iban culture directly from the community. You’ll also visit orangutans at Semenggoh along the way, and take part in activities like a blowpipe demonstration and a short jungle trek. It’s not a luxury experience — but it’s one of the most memorable ways to experience real life in Borneo. What to ExpectVisit Semenggoh orangutan sanctuaryScenic journey through rural SarawakStop at a local market and pepper farm1-hour longboat ride into the rainforestOvernight stay in a traditional Iban longhouseShare meals and rice wine with localsWatch and join traditional Iban dancesTry blowpipe and go on a short jungle trek Note: A small gift for the longhouse is customary and much appreciated.
