Hear wild gibbons at dawn and explore Cat Tien’s ancient forest
If you want the rare chance to hear wild yellow-cheeked gibbons sing at dawn in one of their most important remaining habitats, then this is the Cat Tien trip for you. This 2D1N experience includes a dedicated pre-dawn gibbon trek, when the forest is quiet and their powerful duets echo through the canopy. You’ll follow their calls with a local guide for a chance to observe these elusive primates feeding, resting and moving through the trees in the wild. What makes this special is the timing. You cross the river at 4:30am and wait at a forest listening post as the jungle shifts from night to day. That short window at first light gives you the best chance of locating gibbons by sound, before the day gets hot and the forest becomes quieter. It is also one of the best times to spot other wildlife, including sambar deer, mouse deer, wild boar, black-shanked douc langurs, pig-tailed macaques and birds. The day before, you settle into a simple riverside stay just 750m from the park and about 5–7 minutes from the ferry, which makes that early start much easier. Your first afternoon includes a guided eco trail through giant old-growth trees and a sunset boat ride on the Dong Nai River, where guests often spot kingfishers, nightjars, macaques and other riverbank wildlife. It’s a good fit for travellers who care more about easy park access, wildlife and genuine hospitality than polished resort facilities. What to Expect2D1N experience with 1-night stay in a double room with private ensuite bathroomPre-dawn ferry crossing and guided gibbon trek from the park headquartersWildlife spotting at first light, with chances to see deer, macaques, langurs, wild boar and birdsGuided ecological trail to the 500-year-old Tung tree, giant native trees, the botanical garden and Heaven’s RapidsSunset boat ride on the Dong Nai River, with chances to spot macaques, civets, birds and swimming snakesGood to KnowTransport to and from Cat Tien is not included but can be arranged for an extra feeThe gibbon trek starts very early, around 4:30amExpect walking in humid forest conditions, so proper shoes, leech socks, light clothing and insect repellent are usefulWildlife sightings depend on season, weather and luckYour guide will be a park ranger with strong wildlife-spotting skills.
