Meet culture keepers and explore Nam Ô’s living coastal heritage
Just outside the bustle of Danang city, Nam Ô offers a rare window into a 700-year-old living fishing village, led by a guide who feels more like a cultural activist than a tour guide. Rather than being a heritage 'display', this is a real chance to walk among locals keeping age-old traditions alive—and to get hands-on with one of Vietnam’s most iconic (and often misunderstood) exports: fish sauce. If you're curious about cultural roots, sustainable travel, and love getting off the beaten path, this is for you.Unlike touristy cultural centres or factories, here you’ll get your hands fishy (literally!) in a fish sauce making session with the villagers who still do it the old way, in a craft so unique it’s been recognised as National Intangible Cultural Heritage. You’ll learn how nature, beliefs, and food are all weaved together in local life—from the sacred forest to the whale-worshipping temple. The highlight? You’ll get to meet two of Nam Ô’s deeply respected cultural keepers – Mr. Phú, a fourth-generation fish sauce artisan who founded the grassroots heritage project, and Mr. Vinh, the village chief and head of the Traditional Fish Sauce Guild. Their stories are rarely heard by outsiders, but with the help of a bilingual facilitator, you’ll be able to ask questions, learn from their experiences, and understand how they are preserving tradition while navigating modern challenges like climate change and urban development.Best for conscious travellers, storytellers, and anyone who prefers deep cultural connection over quick sightseeing. This is a slower, richer travel experience that stays with you—especially after the ending circle by the sea, where you’ll reflect on what this journey sparked in you. What to ExpectExplore a working fishing village that’s over 700 years old, far from the usual tourist trailWalk through the sacred Nam Ô Forest and learn local beliefs connected to natureVisit Nam Ô’s communal house where villagers gather and worship the sea guardianMake traditional fish sauce at a heritage workshop and learn the full processHear from villagers about protecting culture in the face of modern changeEnd the experience with a peaceful reflection circle by Moss Beach—through drawing, writing or sharing storiesGood to KnowGetting there: Nam Ô village is about 15km from Đà Nẵng city centre (around a 20–30 minute ride, depending on traffic). You can easily get there and back by Grab or taxi. Transport is at your own expense and not included in the experience.Meeting the culture keepers: Meeting Mr. Phú (4th-generation fish sauce maker) and Mr. Vinh (head of the Nam Ô Fish Sauce Guild) is subject to their availability. Please book at least 2–3 days in advance so the coordinator can help arrange their schedules.Language & facilitation: Local hosts mainly speak Vietnamese. An English-speaking coordinator will accompany you, translate, and guide the reflection activities.Walking & terrain: The experience includes light walking in the village, forest paths, and along the coast. Basic fitness is sufficient, but comfortable walking shoes are recommended.Temple etiquette: You’ll visit communal and sacred spaces (village temple, forest, well), so please dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and follow the coordinator’s guidance on local customs.Weather & conditions: This is an outdoor program. Bring sun protection (hat, sunscreen) and a light raincoat in case of sudden showers. Activities may be adjusted slightly depending on weather and real-life conditions.Supporting local livelihoods: Part of your fee goes directly to local households and initiatives in Nam Ô, helping them continue their traditional way of life.

Quach Thanh Thien is the founder of his regenerative tourism initiative since 2021. Raised in the Mekong Delta, Thien saw early on how unfair life could be — a childhood memory of a friend living in tough conditions stayed with him and shaped his path forward. Over the years, he’s worked in alternative education and community-building, slowly realising how everything is connected — from learning and local economies to tourism. His work reflects a thoughtful approach: supporting small, local businesses, working closely with communities, and choosing partners who share his values. Thien’s not in it for show — he simply wants travel to be something that truly benefits the people and places involved.
