Cycle through a real Red River village, with family crafts still alive
If Hanoi’s better-known craft villages feel too polished, this 3-hour countryside ride is the quieter, more honest alternative. Just 30 minutes from the Old Quarter, you’ll cycle through a real Red River village with a host who was born and raised here, stopping at family homes where daily work still happens - firewood-distilled rice wine, rice milling, corn grinding, and the village’s only remaining áo dài tailoring household. What makes this special is that the village is not frozen in time. It was once known for mulberry growing and silk work, but most of that has faded as younger people moved away and families changed livelihoods. Along the way, you’ll hear those stories from someone who knows the village from the inside, and meet the households still keeping a few traditions alive in practical, everyday ways. This suits travellers who want context, not performance. You’ll ride quiet lanes and riverside paths, hear milling machines, smell fermenting rice wine, browse the local market, and end with a simple seasonal meal. Part of your visit goes back to the families opening their doors, so the experience feels personal and grounded. What to Expect3-hour join-in cycling experience in Xuan Trach Village, around 30 minutes from Hanoi’s Old QuarterGentle ride through rice fields, old village roads, riverside paths, and farmlandVisit a family-run rice wine house to see traditional firewood distillationStop at a rice milling household and try simple old-style milling stepsMeet the family still practicing handmade ao dai tailoring and try a few simple sewing stepsWalk through the local market and choose fresh seasonal ingredientsFinish with a light countryside mealContributions to local families keeping these small crafts aliveGood to KnowMeet directly at Xuan Trach Village Cultural House; transport to and from the village is not includedBest for travellers comfortable cycling at an easy pace, with short walks and hands-on activitiesThis is a real working village, not a recreated heritage attraction. Meet your host

Ngoc is someone who truly lives what she believes in. Based in Hanoi, she’s spent years finding thoughtful ways to reduce waste, from making bamboo toothbrushes to turning kitchen scraps into plant fertiliser. She’s also hands-on in her community, teaming up with groups like Keep Vietnam Clean to help tackle rubbish and promote greener habits. In 2025, she started welcoming travellers into a more down-to-earth side of Hanoi — offering the chance to make tofu the traditional way with a local family, using no additives and wasting nothing. It’s her way of keeping old crafts alive while gently showing how a more sustainable lifestyle can be simple, meaningful, and shared.
