Learn natural dyeing from Thai women and take home your own hand-dyed silk scarf!
Step into Hoa Tien Brocade's cozy studio, located on the outskirts of Hanoi, and enjoy a colourful morning - made all naturally! During the workshop, you will be able to learn about the traditional art of natural dyeing among Thai people, who have been using this technique for generations. You'll also gain an insight into the deep-rooted crafts practices of the Thai minority people in Vietnam. Best of all, you'll get hands-on and make your own hand-dyed silk scarf which you can take home!Your instructor will be Sam Thi Tinh - founder of Hoa Tien Brocade and a Thai woman who has been dyeing and weaving since she was 14 years old. In this workshop, you will use natural ingredients to create your own 40x40cm scarf. Another unique thing about Hoa Tien Brocade is it's situated in a craft village called Me Tri Village. Me Tri is one of two villages in Hanoi that are renowned for producing "Cốm Hà Nội," or green rice flakes. This popular food represents the autumn season in Hanoi. If you visit the city during late summer or autumn, be sure to indulge in this delicacy. The profession of making green rice flakes has been a part of Me Tri's heritage for over 100 years, and their green rice flakes are now enjoyed not only domestically but also globally, as they're exported to countries such as Japan, the UK, and the US, and are popular gifts for international tourists. The skill of making green rice flakes has been passed down through generations in Me Tri, and their unique method remains a secret. Me Tri's green rice flakes have become a symbol of Hanoi and Vietnamese culture, cherished by locals and visitors alike. What to ExpectLearn the traditional dyeing technique using natural ingredientsCreate your own 40x40cm scarfGain an understanding of Thai traditions and culture

Meet your host
Hoa Tien Brocade is an embroidery and natural-dyed studio founded by Sam Thi Tinh. Tinh is a Thai woman that moved to Hanoi from Hoa Tien Village, Nghe An - one of the oldest (over 100 years old) and most famous brocade-weaving cradles of Thai people. In 2010, Tinh's mother - Mrs. Sam Thi Bich - started a cooperative business to help increase the income of Thai women in Nghe An and preserve their culture and traditions. Following in her mother's footsteps, Tinh opened her studio in Hanoi as a showroom to share the beauty of Thai handicrafts with the world. Every Hoa Tien item is made entirely by hand from planting raw materials, dyeing fabrics, weaving, and embroidering into fashion accessories or home decor. It is Tinh's passion to help her own community and tell more people about her culture through what she grew up with - weaving, fabric-dyeing, and embroidery.
