But behind every lion head is a much deeper world of family lineage, Cantonese-Vietnamese identity, martial arts discipline, and community memory.In this experience, you’ll step inside a private ancestral hall and lion dance martial arts school in Chinatown with more than 40 years of history. It’s a rare chance to understand how lion dance and Choy Lee Fut martial arts have been preserved by Cantonese-Vietnamese families in Saigon, and how these traditions continue to shape community life today.Your host, Mr. Buu, was born into this world. Raised in a Cantonese-Vietnamese martial arts family, he grew up surrounded by lion heads, training tools, temple rituals, festival performances, and the values of loyalty, respect, discipline, and brotherhood. Through his stories, you’ll learn how Chinese immigrant communities in Vietnam kept their heritage alive — not just through language and food, but through movement, ritual, and shared practice.You’ll explore the private ancestral hall and heritage room, where old weapons, lion heads, lineage records, training objects, and cultural artifacts reveal the story of the troupe and the wider Chinatown community. Along the way, you’ll learn the meaning behind lion dance colours, movements, festival customs, and why the lion has long been seen as a symbol of protection, prosperity, and good fortune.To bring the tradition to life, you’ll also try beginner-friendly Choy Lee Fut martial arts movements and experience basic wooden dummy training. Buu grew up in Ho Chi Minh City in a Cantonese-Chinese family where martial arts and lion dance were part of everyday life. By the age of three, he could already perform a full ground lion dance routine on his own. As a teenager, he moved to Australia to study design, hoping to bring modern ideas back to traditional lion and dragon dance. He later returned early, took on a cultural and communications role, and now helps guide the troupe’s direction. What makes him stand out is how he bridges old and new—training seriously in martial arts while also writing and preserving lion dance traditions for the next generation.
