Private trek to hidden waterfalls and support local Bidayuh communities
This private waterfall day trip is perfect if you want a real Borneo jungle experience without the crowds. You’ll trek from a quiet village near the Malaysia–Indonesia border into the rainforest to reach two hidden waterfalls. Most of the time, you’ll have them to yourself - just you, your guide, and the jungle. What makes this extra special is what happens at the waterfall. Instead of just stopping for photos, you’ll help prepare a traditional Bidayuh meal cooked in bamboo over a fire, using simple local ingredients. While the food cooks, you can swim or relax by the rocks. On the way back, you’ll visit Annah Rais — one of the few remaining Bidayuh longhouses — where you can explore the village and even see preserved human skulls from its headhunting past. This experience was started by Abbie and Dawson as a way to support villages around Kuching. Being Bidayuh herself, Abbie grew up around these communities and now works directly with villagers to run each trip — so your visit helps support local families and keep traditions alive. It’s private, unhurried, and really meaningful. If you're curious about indigenous culture, love a bit of trekking and want to connect deeper with the land, you'll love this. What to ExpectPrivate jungle trek to two hidden waterfallsSwim in clear pools (often no crowds)Help cook a Bidayuh meal in bambooPicnic-style lunch by the waterfallVisit Annah Rais Bidayuh longhouseHear stories about local culture and jungle lifeHotel transfers, lunch and drinks includedAll entrance and transport costs included~3km trek each way, mostly gentle terrainGood to KnowPrivate experience (no other groups)Suitable for beginners and families

Backyard Tour started in 2015, building on a small social project that aimed to support local villagers around Kuching. Being Bidayuh herself, Abbie who is among one of the second largest indigenous groups in Sarawak—she brings genuine insight into the culture and landscapes she grew up with. What makes Abbie stand out is her commitment to making sure each experience benefits the local community. Every trip organised through Backyard Tour not connects travellers with the people and places of Borneo. She’s kept things grounded and community-focused, staying true to the roots of where it all began.
