Snorkel with ex–shark fisherman for a real, feel-good ocean experience
This full-day snorkelling trip in East Lombok isn’t just about pretty coral and clear water — it’s something much more meaningful. You’ll head out on a boat with ex–shark fisherman, snorkelling through marine-rich waters and learning about the realities behind shark fishing. The day begins at Tanjung Luar, a local fish market, where you’ll understand why moving away from shark fishing isn’t as simple as it sounds. Along the way, you’ll snorkel over beautiful coral reefs, surrounded by colourful tropical fish, sea stars, and — if you’re lucky — baby sharks in their natural habitat.Unlike mass snorkelling tours that rush you from one photo spot to the next, this experience is about slowing down, connecting with the place, and hearing real stories from the people who call it home. You’ll enjoy a delicious vegetarian lunch at Pink Beach, free snacks during the trip and have the option to take part in a beach clean-up, making it ideal for thoughtful travellers who care about the ocean and value authentic experiences. By joining this trip, you’re supporting ex–shark boat crew who now earn a living through responsible tourism instead of shark fishing — perfect for thoughtful travellers who value authentic, ocean-positive experiences. What to ExpectVisit a local fish market and learn about the complexities of shark fishing from those who lived itHead out on a boat with former shark fisherman who really know these watersSnorkel at three different spots known for healthy corals and colourful marine life, including tropical fish and sea stars, with the chance to visit a fourth if time and conditions allow — and if you’re lucky, you might even spot baby sharksEnjoy a vegetarian lunch at Pink BeachRelax at Pink Beach before heading backOptional: join a casual beach clean-up to leave the place better than you found itGood to KnowParts of the area (including Pink Beach) can have visible trash — a real reflection of wider waste managemnet challenges in Lombok. You can contribute in a small way by helping to clean up the beach. Your guides can pick up bags to pick up trash in if you let them know in advance. As fishing is part of their lifelong background, some former shark fishermen may still occasionally touch marine life out of habit. This is something the team actively works on, with regular reminders and guidance to continuously improve conservation practicesAn English-speaking guide will be with you throughout, helping translate if you’d like to hear stories from the ex–shark fishermanThe snorkelling trip is beginner-friendly, and snorkelling gear is providedReturn transfers are included from and to Mataram, Kuta, Praya, and Selong. Please note that pickups from Senggigi, the Gili Islands, or other farther locations are not available, as the travel time would be too long for a comfortable day tripImportant context at the fish market: you may see shark meat being traded, baby sharks for sale, or shark teeth sold as souvenirs. While confronting, this visit is a key part of the experience — it helps explain why shark fishing exists, the challenges of changing livelihoods, and why supporting alternative, conservation-led tourism matters

Kathy Xu spent seven years teaching History in Singapore, where she often discussed ocean health and conservation with her students. While she enjoyed her time in the classroom, she felt drawn to do more for the oceans she often talked about with her students. In 2012, she made a big change—leaving teaching to work with former shark fishermen in Lombok, Indonesia. Now, instead of hunting sharks, they lead snorkelling trips and share their knowledge of the sea. Kathy’s work helps protect marine life, supports local families with steady incomes, and creates meaningful learning experiences for visitors and schools. It’s clear she genuinely cares about both people and the planet, and she’s found a thoughtful way to connect the two.
