Kinabatangan off the beaten path with grassroots, community-led adventures
Looking for a quieter Kinabatangan wildlife stay, away from the busy lodge area? This 2D1N jungle camp stay in Kinabatangan brings you into a lesser-visited stretch of the river, where nature comes first and tourism moves at a gentler pace. Built and run by the local community, the camp sits within a protected forest reserve, far from the busy lodge clusters, offering the same rich wildlife encounters, but in a calmer, more intimate setting.Your stay supports a grassroots effort that began over 20 years ago, initiated by villagers who sought to protect their forest while creating sustainable livelihoods for their community. The guides are locals who have a deep understanding of this landscape and have been involved in conservation work here for decades. Staying here directly supports their ongoing efforts to care for the river and rainforest, while ensuring tourism benefits the people who live alongside it.The camp itself is simple, quiet and focused on the forest, ideal if you’re looking for a more local, less commercial wildlife experience. Roles are shared and hands-on, and you’ll feel that community spirit everywhere — even the general manager might be the one fixing a light bulb. It’s heartfelt, humble and deeply rooted in place, nothing like a typical resort. What to ExpectQuiet river cruises with strong chances of wildlife sightingsGuided day and night walks led by local village guidesLearn about long-running community conservation effortsSimple jungle living in a protected forest reserveFewer boats, fewer crowdsGood to KnowIncludes 1 night at a community-run jungle camp, dinner and breakfastWildlife sightings depend on natural conditions and patienceOptional lodge stay closer to the village (no boat transfer)Your stay directly supports community conservation work

The Batu Puteh Community has been running things since 2003, when a few local groups came together to form KOPEL Bhd. It all started with the MESCOT Initiative and the Miso Walai Homestay Programme, and over time it grew into a proper cooperative. These days, more than 340 members from nearby villages are involved, each playing a part in the ecotourism and conservation work they do. What makes this group stand out is how they keep things local—offering jobs to people in the area and sharing earnings among members. It’s a community effort through and through, built on working together and looking after the place they call home.
