Come along on a journey following ancient trails of Tibetan people
If you’re after something that actually feels like Shangri-La, this is it. A 3-day, 2-night stay at Farm Liotard takes you 20km into Ringha Valley, where you stay within the grounds of a restored 50-year-old Tibetan farmhouse, surrounded by barley fields, grazing yaks, and quiet village life. It’s not a resort, and it’s not a quick cultural stop. It’s two nights living in the landscape that most travellers only pass through, and you will experience a modern caravan-style journey inspired by the Tea Horse Road tradition. The pace is slow and grounded. On your first afternoon, you walk about 7km through rolling hills, river crossings, and small villages, stopping at Dabosi Temple along the way. It’s less about ticking sights off and more about noticing the details, from timber houses to farmers at work. Back at the farmhouse, tea is poured as the light fades, followed by a home-style dinner.Day two heads deeper into the mountains, with one horse to ride and another carrying supplies, echoing the old caravan routes that once ran through these valleys. You’ll picnic on open grassland at around 3,650m, with wide views and barely another soul around, before looping back on a different trail. By evening, you’re back at the farmhouse, settling into the same quiet rhythm of the valley. It’s ideal if you want a bit of movement, a strong sense of place, and a side of Shangri-La that still feels untouched. At Ferme Liotard, the horse culture is an essential part of Tibetan mountain life and the historic caravan routes that once connected these valleys. Horses were traditionally used for travel, trade, and the transport of goods across high-altitude terrain, and this experience draws on that same heritage. The local Tibetan community is directly involved in running the journey, with income flowing back to them in a meaningful way, helping to support and preserve skills and traditions passed down through generations. It offers a glimpse into their daily rhythm of life in the mountains, shaped by these enduring practices. Horse riding is included as part of the expedition but remains optional, and guests are free to choose whether to ride or simply walk alongside the route. What to Expect2-night stay in Ringha ValleyChoose between cosy rooms or glamping within a Tibetan farmhouse compoundTransfers to and from Shangri-La town includedDay 1: ~7km (3-hour) valley walk through villages, rivers, hills, and Dabosi TempleDay 2: mountain walk with optional horse riding, plus a support horse for suppliesHighland picnic, tea at the farmhouse, and home-style dinnersBreakfast before returning to town on day 3English-speaking guide throughout

Mission Liotard is based in Shangri-La, in the northwest of Yunnan Province, near the border with Tibet. The area sits on the edge of the Himalayas and is known for its high-altitude landscapes and strong Tibetan cultural influence. Founded in 2010 by French writer and traveller Constantin de Slizewicz, the project grew out of his time exploring this remote region and the historic expedition routes that pass through it. The idea behind Mission Liotard is to share this landscape in a way that respects both the environment and local communities, while supporting the development of people living in these high-altitude valleys. The experiences are inspired by the old Tea Horse caravan routes, combining real outdoor exploration with a level of comfort in the wild. Each journey is supported by a mule caravan carrying supplies, making it possible to enjoy well-prepared meals and a comfortable camp even at high altitudes, while staying closely connected to the natural surroundings and local culture.
