Kick-start your own edible garden that thrives in Singapore!
This hands-on garden experience invites teams to reconnect with nature and discover a more sustainable way of living - starting with the plants around us. With her invaluable experience in designing, setting up and maintaining edible gardens, Joy and her team will guide you in exploring native and lesser-known edible plants that thrive in Singapore’s climate.Teams will get up close with plants that often go unnoticed or misunderstood - from Kang Kong, a “cut-and-come-again” vegetable that keeps producing when harvested correctly, to Brazilian Spinach, a beginner-friendly, fibre-rich green that thrives even in semi-shade and works beautifully in soups, stir-fries, and pestos. You may also encounter flowering plants like Chinese violet, commonly grown as an ornamental roadside plant but surprisingly edible, with a mushroom-like flavour that attracts bees, butterflies, and even sunbirds.Designed with modern urban living in mind, you'll discover how to cultivate herbs and vegetables even in limited spaces, taste uncommon native herbs, pick up easy plant-care tips, and bring home cuttings and seeds to kickstart your very own edible garden. You'll leave feeling empowered with practical knowledge to apply at home, and a renewed appreciation for how food, nature, and sustainability are deeply connected. What to ExpectA tour of an edible garden filled with native herbs and plantsHands-on activities: seed planting & cuttingsPractical tips for small-space gardening and sustainable methodsTaste uncommon local herbs you won’t find at most supermarketsTake home your own seeds and cuttingsPrinted guide/slides and access to an online support groupGood to KnowWorkshop duration: ~2 hours in a cosy, relaxed settingPerfect for beginners – no gardening background neededEspecially suited for small spaces like balconies or indoor cornersAll tools, materials, and refreshments are providedEco-conscious setup using low-waste and upcycled methods

Chris and Joy are the friendly faces behind The Freestyle Farmers, a project they started in 2023 after years of digging in the soil themselves. What began with designing edible gardens soon turned into something more hands-on – teaching others how to grow, cook, and craft with what they grow. They’re all about making gardening approachable and practical, showing people how to make the most of their plants in everyday life. Their workshops are shaped by sustainable thinking, using upcycled materials and focusing on low-waste methods. With a good mix of creativity and care for nature, Chris and Joy are creating spaces where people can learn, connect, and grow something meaningful – even if it’s just on a balcony.
