Learn to spot local fish at Tekka Market and buy seafood responsibly
If your mum or grandma never taught you how to pick fish at the wet market, here’s your chance to finally learn.Instead of a general food tour, this Tekka Market Fish Tour goes deep into the wet market's fish section, helping you identify local species, learn the names fishmongers actually use, and make more informed, sustainable seafood choices. You won't just be hearing fish facts. You'll look at as many local species as the market has that day and learn how they're used across different cuisines, what they are good for in the kitchen, and how to spot key differences in anatomy, texture, and ecology. It's practical knowledge that gives you more confidence the next time you buy seafood from the wet market.Along the way, you’ll also begin to see Tekka Market differently - not just as a place to shop, but as a living part of Singapore’s food culture. By the end, you won’t just know how to choose your fish; you’ll understand the traditions behind it, and feel more connected to the way we eat, cook, and live here. What to Expect2-hour join-in walk through Tekka MarketLearn to identify a wide range of local fish speciesHear local fish names, cultural uses, recipes, basic ecology, and fish anatomyTips from an experienced fish guide on choosing seafood more confidently and responsiblyGood to KnowFood is not includedWhat you see will depend on the day's catch and market availabilityExpect a real wet market setting with wet floors, strong smells, and a busy local atmosphere

Meet your host
The team behind this experience started it in 2025 after years working in conservation at WWF Singapore. The idea came during a trip through Cambodia and Vietnam, where busy seafood markets reminded them of childhood visits to Singapore’s wet markets with their families — something they felt was quietly disappearing. Today, they help people understand where their seafood comes from, why traceability matters, and how everyday choices affect marine life. Their work also supports Singapore’s wet markets, fish farms and fishing village heritage, with the hope of keeping both local food traditions and marine ecosystems alive.
