Phong Nha: Everything you need to know
Your essential guide to exploring Phong Nha — the cave capital of Vietnam.

If you love adventure, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is a must-go. It’s known as Vietnam’s “Kingdom of Caves”, with hundreds of caves hidden beneath the jungle - including the world’s largest cave, Son Doong.
Visiting Son Doong is incredibly hard (permits sell out years in advance!), but it's still worth coming to Phong Nha even if you can't see the biggest cave. There are still plenty of amazing caves you can explore here, from swimming through underground rivers to jungle treks and cave camping.
The Basics
Where is Phong Nha?
Phong Nha is in Central Vietnam, in Quang Binh Province near the Laos border. It sits inside Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO site famous for its huge cave systems and limestone mountains.
The nearest city is Dong Hoi, which has both an airport and train station. From there, it’s about a 45-minute drive to Phong Nha town, the small town where most travellers stay when exploring the caves.
What to do here?
Caving is the main thing to do in Phong Nha, with options for every level. You can walk through Paradise Cave to see huge stalactites, or zipline into Dark Cave for a swim and mud bath inside the cave. For bigger adventures, there are jungle treks to wild caves like Tiger Cave, Hung Thoong and Ruc Mon, where you’ll scramble through passages, swim through underground rivers and camp near cave entrances. You can also explore the national park on guided jungle walks.
Who is it for?
Phong Nha is perfect for adventure lovers and nature enthusiasts. If you enjoy exploring caves, trekking through jungle, or trying something a bit different, you’ll love it here.
There are options for all levels - from easy cave walks to full jungle treks and cave camping. It works well for solo travellers, couples and families, and many tours are join-in, so it’s easy to meet other travellers along the way.
How to get to Phong Nha?
The easiest way to reach Phong Nha is via Dong Hoi, the nearest city about 45 minutes away. Dong Hoi has both a domestic airport and train station, so most travellers will arrive here.
If you're coming from Hanoi, you can take an overnight sleeper bus directly to Phong Nha, or take a train or short flight to Dong Hoi, followed by a 45-minute transfer to Phong Nha town.
If you're coming from Ho Chi Minh City, the fastest way is to fly to Dong Hoi, then take a 45-minute taxi or shuttle to Phong Nha.
If you're coming from Hue or Da Nang, you can take a bus or train to Dong Hoi, then continue with a taxi or shuttle to Phong Nha. Dong Hoi is the closest city and the main gateway to the park.
How much time to spend here?
You can visit Phong Nha on a day trip, but we’d recommend staying at least one night if you can.
Many of the best cave adventures are 2D1N or 3D2N expeditions, often with jungle trekking and cave camping. Spending a few days here also gives you time to explore easier caves like Paradise Cave or Dark Cave, and enjoy the laid-back countryside around Phong Nha town.
Best time to go?
The best time to visit Phong Nha is April to August, when the weather is mostly dry and cave conditions are good. April and May are especially nice, with cooler temperatures and lush jungle scenery.
June to August is hotter, but the caves stay cool and it’s great for swimming in underground rivers.
September to November is the rainy season, and many cave expeditions stop because of flooding.
December to March can be cooler and wetter, so some tours may be limited depending on the weather.
Helpful questions
Do I need a guide to see the caves?
Yes - most caves in Phong Nha require a guide. For safety and conservation reasons, the national park only allows cave exploration with licensed guides and organised tours. Many adventure caves have no marked trails and require proper equipment.
Some popular caves like Paradise Cave, Phong Nha Cave and Dark Cave can be visited more easily with an entrance ticket. But the more adventurous caves — such as Tiger Cave, Hung Thoong or Ruc Mon — can only be explored on guided tours.
What's the difference between the Phong Nha tours?
Each cave tour in Phong Nha is a bit different because operators are given access to specific cave routes, so no two companies run the exact same itinerary.
Most tours include a mix of dry caves (to see huge stalactites and stalagmites) and wet caves where you swim or wade through underground rivers. Some are more adventurous with things like ziplining, kayaking or abseiling, while others focus more on jungle trekking or visiting remote cave systems. The difficulty and experience really depend on which cave you choose.
How do I choose the right cave tour?
When choosing a cave tour in Phong Nha, think about three main things:
Fitness level: Some caves are easy walks suitable for most people, while others involve long jungle treks, swimming through caves, and camping overnight.
Type of adventure: If you just want to see beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, go for an easier cave like Paradise Cave. If you want something more adventurous, choose a jungle trek or multi-day cave expedition.
Budget: The more adveturous expeditions usually cost more because they include multi-day trekking, guides, porters and comfortable jungle camping setups.

Packing List
Clothes
Quick-dry tops, pants & undergarments (1 set per trekking day – avoid cotton)
Long socks
Waterproof rain jacket / windbreaker (weather is unpredictable, even in dry season)
Swimwear (for underground river swims and natural pools)
Hat or cap (for sun protection during jungle trekking)
Gloves (optional, but helpful for rope sections or scrambling over rocks)
Neck gaiter / buff (for warmth and sun or dust protection)
Headlamp (often provided, but good to bring your own backup)
👉 Tip: Wear bright-colored clothing (think red, yellow, or blue) to really pop in your cave photos—it creates a striking contrast against the dark cave walls!
Footwear
You’ll be trekking through streams, wet caves, and jungle trails, so expect your shoes to get soaked. Choose footwear that’s comfortable when wet, has strong grip, and drains well.
Do NOT wear Goretex or waterproof boots—they trap water and take a long time to dry.
Most tour operators offer rental jungle shoes (sizes 37–45), which are suitable for the terrain. If you wear a different size or prefer your own gear, we recommend bringing your own trekking shoes or trail runners that can handle wet conditions.
Also pack a pair of camp sandals or flip-flops for evenings at camp or the homestay—something easy to slip on and dry out.

FAQ
Is there mobile coverage?
In Phong Nha town and surrounding villages, 3G and 4G signals are generally reliable, especially with major Vietnamese carriers like Viettel, Vinaphone, and Mobifone. Once you venture into the caves or deeper into the jungle, mobile signal typically disappears. It's advisable to inform your contacts in advance about potential communication gaps.
What’s the toilet situation like?
On most adventure cave tours in Phong Nha, especially multi-day treks, composting toilets are used at campsites to minimize environmental impact. These are typically set up inside a private toilet tent, equipped with a standard seat and a waste bucket. After use, you’ll cover the waste with rice husks or sawdust provided to help control odor and support composting. While basic, these eco-friendly toilets are clean, private, and thoughtfully maintained—part of the adventure, without compromising on comfort or hygiene.
Do I need to carry all my stuff?
Nope — you won’t be hauling everything yourself. On most cave expeditions in Phong Nha, porters handle the heavy lifting, carrying shared gear like tents, sleeping bags, food, and cooking equipment. And they do it all while trekking the same rugged trails—often in nothing more than flip-flops.
You’ll only need to carry your personal items, like clothes, water, and snacks. On some tours, porters may even offer to carry up to 3kg of your gear, making the trek easier.
