This full-day rainforest trek is perfect if you’re craving a short gateway to Borneo adventure – minus the tourist crowds. Starting from a quiet village near the Malaysia-Indonesia (Kalimantan) border, you’ll hike to two hidden waterfalls deep in the jungle, where you can swim in crystal-clear pools with no one else around (seriously, 90% of the time it’s just you and nature). Along the way, you’ll be guided by friendly locals who grew up here and know the land like the back of their hands. What really sets this apart from other waterfall tours is how personal and immersive the whole experience is. Once you book, the trip is private to your group, so you won’t be tagging along with strangers. You’ll also get to learn how to cook traditional Bidayuh meals over a bamboo fire – it's not every day you’re shown how to prep lunch in the jungle by someone who still lives it.This is for travelers who want to step away from mass tourism and explore Sarawak with the people who call it home. If you're curious about indigenous culture, love a bit of trekking and want to connect deeper with the land, you'll love this. What to ExpectPrivate rainforest trek to two stunning hidden waterfalls – Ban Buan Kukuot & Mabi FallsSwim in crystal-clear pools, usually with no other tourists in sightCook and enjoy traditional Bidayuh food made in bamboo over a campfireLunch at the waterfall - picnic styleVisit an authentic Bidayuh longhouse and learn about the community's way of lifeHear stories about Bidayuh culture, plants and the rainforest from your local guideGood to KnowThis is a private tour – no other groups will join your tripIncludes hotel transfers from central Kuching, lunch and refreshmentsThe trek covers about 3km in each direction, with gentle terrain suitable for beginners and families (even those with young kids or older travelers)Bring swimwear, a towel, mosquito repellent, and a spare change of clothesEntrance to the village and transport costs are all coveredThe trail is about 3km to the first waterfall and then back via a second one, with some uphill and muddy patches depending on rain. Backyard Tour started in 2015, building on a small social project that aimed to support local villagers around Kuching. Being Bidayuh herself, Abbie who is among one of the largest indigenous groups in Sarawak—she brings genuine insight into the culture and landscapes she grew up with. What makes Abbie stand out is her commitment to making sure each experience benefits the local community. Every trip organised through Backyard Tour not only connects travellers with the people and places of Borneo but also supports education and training efforts in those same villages. She’s kept things grounded and community-focused, staying true to the roots of where it all began.
