A fascinating Bali village experience where owls help protect the rice fields.
If you want to see a side of Bali that most travellers miss, this village experience stands out for one rare reason: owls are part of the farming system here. Instead of using chemical pesticides, the community works with Tyto Alba owls as natural pest controllers to protect their rice fields. It’s a great fit for travellers who are curious about rural life, sustainability, and traditions that are still lived, not staged for visitors. You’ll walk through the fields with villagers, meet local farmers, and see traditional lumbung rice barns while learning how organic farming works here. There’s also a chance to taste the village’s organic red rice tea, a local speciality that’s closely tied to their farming practices and way of life. The most memorable part comes after dark. Following a shared village meal, you’ll visit the owl conservation area and head out to watch the owls begin their nightly patrols. That mix of conservation, food, farming, and village life makes this feel far more meaningful than a standard cultural stop. What to ExpectWarm welcome with a local drink and snackGuided walk through rice fields and the villageMeet local farmers and learn about Balinese organic farmingVisit traditional lumbung rice storage buildingsTaste organic red rice teaLearn how Tyto Alba owls help control pests naturallyVisit the owl conservation areaCommunal meal with local dishesNight walk to observe the owls in actionTipsThis experience is weather dependent, so the schedule may change if conditions are not suitableExpect some walking on uneven ground through rice fields and around the villageBest for travellers interested in nature, farming, and local community lifeVegetarian meals and other dietary needs can be accommodated with advance noticePlease dress respectfully and follow local guidance when visiting the villageYour visit helps provide shared income for the local community

Wira began his work in 2015 with a clear goal: helping rural communities grow while giving local youth more chances to learn useful skills. After seeing how tourism often missed village life in Bali, he started building community-based experiences with local leaders in 2016. By 2019, this grew into Five Pillar Experiences, connecting travelers with everyday traditions, local stories, and village life in a respectful way. In 2020, he opened a learning center in North Bali to support education and cultural preservation. Wira also helps run Mai Kubu Space, supports a village waste initiative with bamboo bins, and plants one mangrove tree for every guest who joins an experience.
