Experience the magic of fireflies in a local village + enjoy yummy dinner.
Fireflies used to light up Bali’s night skies. Now they’re almost gone. Pesticides, pollution and artificial light are wiping them out. But one local scientist, Wayan, is fighting to bring them back. This is your chance to see these magical creatures in the wild before it’s too late, and be part of the mission to save them. You’ll visit Indonesia’s only firefly conservation lab, built by Wayan on his family farm. You’ll learn how he’s raising fireflies from egg to glow, explore the village plantations that support their return, and go on a twilight walk to see them flicker to life. Then, you’ll cook and share a homemade Balinese dinner with Wayan’s family — a rare glimpse into real village life, far from the crowds. What to expect:🌱 Firefly Conservation Lab Tour: Start your journey at Wayan’s open-air lab under the palm trees. See firefly larvae, pupae and adult beetles up close, and learn how Wayan and his team have bred over 40 fireflies in captivity to bring their light back to Bali.🌾 Nature Walk to Their Habitat: Take a short walk through organic plantations at dusk, passing moringa, coffee, and durian trees—all grown without chemicals to support biodiversity. As the sun sets, keep your eyes peeled: if nature allows, the fireflies will begin their magical light show.🔥 Fireflies & Balinese Culture: Hear how fireflies are more than insects here—they’re believed to be ancestral spirits and symbols of balance in Balinese tradition. Wayan will share how the conservation work is rooted in Tri Hita Karana, the Balinese philosophy of harmony between humans, nature, and the divine.🍲 Cook & Dine with the Family: Round off your evening with a cosy, family-style dinner. Join Wayan’s family in the kitchen to prepare dishes like moringa soup, bamboo-grilled chicken, tempeh skewers, and steamed vegetables with grated coconut. Then, gather together to share what you’ve made.Important tips:Note: Depending on the location, there might be a small entrance fee to support local conservation efforts.Difficulty: The walk is generally easy and suitable for most fitness levels.Free for kids aged 5 and under. Why is firefly conservation so important?Fireflies are magical creatures that light up the night sky. They are a joy to see, and their presence is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. However, fireflies are declining in many parts of the world, including Bali. There are many reasons why fireflies are disappearing. One reason is habitat loss. Fireflies need clean air, non-contaminated water, and fertile soil to survive. When their habitats are destroyed, they cannot live there anymore.Another reason for firefly decline is light pollution. Fireflies use light to communicate with each other, and when there is too much artificial light, they cannot see each other. This can lead to problems with mating and reproduction. Finally, fireflies are also being harmed by pesticides. Pesticides can kill fireflies directly, or they can make it difficult for them to find food. The decline of fireflies is a serious problem. Fireflies are important pollinators, and they help to control insect pests. They also play a role in the food chain. Without fireflies, our ecosystems would be less healthy.By joining this activity, you'll not only experience the magic of these creatures but also support their conservation in the village. Your participation directly contributes to their protection and a sustainable environment.
