DIY traditional tofu-making with locals in a real Hanoi village kitchen
There’s tofu… and then there’s tofu made the old-school way, by one of the last families in Hanoi still doing it all by hand (well, almost all). This early morning experience takes you across the Duong River on a local ferry, into the heart of village life where tradition is still alive and well. You’ll meet a lovely husband-wife team who’ve been making tofu for decades — not for profit, but with real heart and pride in their craft. It’s not a polished tourist setup. It’s raw, real, and deeply personal. While most tofu makers have switched to shortcuts, this couple still follow the full step-by-step method passed down through generations — clean water, no chemicals, no preservatives, and absolutely nothing wasted. The leftover soybean pulp is shared with neighbours to feed pigs and chickens. The sour water from the pressing process is reused as a natural cleaner. Nothing is tossed out — it’s all part of the ecosystem. What's even more special? You won’t just watch — you’ll actually get your hands dirty and try it yourself. Roll up your sleeves, grind the soaked soybeans, stir the bubbling pots, press the tofu with traditional tools... it's DIY tofu-making from start to finish, guided gently by experts who’ve done this their whole lives. If you're a conscious foodie, enjoy learning practical skills, or just love getting stuck in, this rural experience will give you something real to take home — along with the taste of your very own handmade tofu. What to ExpectRide a local ferry across the Duong River, just like the villagers do every dayStep into the home of one of the last families making tofu the traditional wayWatch, learn, and even join in each careful stage of the tofu-making process, from soaked soybeans to finished productSee how nothing goes to waste — even the by-products are put to good useHave a warm, personal Q&A with the tofu makers (with translation support)Finish with a rustic breakfast or early lunch of freshly made tofu and bun noodlesGood to KnowThis is a join-in experience — perfect for solo travellers or small groups looking to connect with localsStart times are flexible — choose 5am, 6am or 7am from the Long Bien ferry pointIt’s best to go early — the couple starts making tofu at 4am to sell at the morning market. If you come too late, much of the process may already be doneThe couple only speak Vietnamese — your friendly host, Ngoc, will translate everything for youYou'll need to arrange your own transport to and from the meeting point at Long BienExpect a truly humble home setting — this is a real family kitchen, not a tourist setupSince this is still a working family business, timing and pace may vary slightly — it’s all part of the charm

Ngoc is someone who truly lives what she believes in. Based in Hanoi, she’s spent years finding thoughtful ways to reduce waste, from making bamboo toothbrushes to turning kitchen scraps into plant fertiliser. She’s also hands-on in her community, teaming up with groups like Keep Vietnam Clean to help tackle rubbish and promote greener habits. In 2025, she started welcoming travellers into a more down-to-earth side of Hanoi — offering the chance to make tofu the traditional way with a local family, using no additives and wasting nothing. It’s her way of keeping old crafts alive while gently showing how a more sustainable lifestyle can be simple, meaningful, and shared.
