Hike through a 130-million-year-old rainforest, spot wildlife and more.
Imagine trekking through one of the world's oldest rainforests – a 130-million-year-old ecological masterpiece teeming with life. That's Danum Valley Field Centre, your gateway to Borneo's wild heart. While orangutans, elephants, and gibbons call this place home, the dense jungle keeps its secrets well guarded. Spotting wildlife here is a privilege, not a guarantee, but the reward is the immersive experience of venturing into an ancient ecosystem where every rustle and bird call is a symphony of nature's resilience. Here's what you can expect on this unforgettable rainforest adventure:Hikes led by experts: Your guides will share fascinating insights and lead you on trails less traveled.Rare and elusive wildlife: Keep your eyes peeled for orangutans, pygmy elephants, gibbons, and a kaleidoscope of birds and insects. Remember, patience and a keen eye are your best tools in this wildlife haven.Night walks with a twist: The rainforest transforms after dark. Join a guided night walk to encounter nocturnal creatures and witness the forest come alive under the moonlit canopy.Comfortable basecamp: The Field Centre offers simple yet comfortable accommodations, providing a welcome respite after your daily explorations.Scientific immersion: Learn about ongoing research projects, conservation efforts, and the delicate balance of life in this ancient rainforest. Here's the lowdown on your rainforest adventure:Day 1: Get your bearings (and maybe your boots muddy): Touchdown at the Field Centre, get the inside scoop from the staff, then hit the trails for your first taste of Borneo's biodiversity. After dinner, it's time for a night walk – who knows what glowing eyes you'll spot?Day 2: Rise, shine, and rainforest time! If you're feeling adventurous, grab a 4x4 and chase the sunrise over Bukit Atur (extra fee, but worth it). Otherwise, dive right into rainforest trekking. Take a midday dip in the Ulu Segama River – the perfect cool-down. Then, it's back to the trails, ending with a sunset view that'll make you want to move here. Another night walk wraps up the day.Day 3: One last rainforest hurrah! Get up early for a final trek to catch the forest waking up. After breakfast, wander the Field Centre grounds – maybe you'll spot something new. Then, it's back to civilization, but you'll be taking a piece of this ancient forest with you.Things to keep in mind:Two guest minimum: This experience requires a minimum of two persons to proceedPack for the jungle: Think sturdy shoes, rain gear, and clothes that dry quickly.Entrance fees apply: The Field Centre charges a fee to enter the conservation area, so budget accordingly.Optional extras: The sunrise drive and night drive are super cool add-ons, but they're not included in the base price.Fitness level: The trails are not challenging, though there is some uneven terrain in the jungle. As long as you do regular light cardio and can walk for a few hours, you'll be ok.
