We recently had the honour of visiting the Batang Ai Iban Longhouse with the amazing guide Mas. Our trip was truly memorable. Mas was so friendly, helpful and generous, and shared so much local knowledge with us. On the way we stopped at the semenggoh nature reserve to see orangutans, visited local markets and ate delicious food. Then our time at the longhouse was really special, truly immersed in the local way of life. Sometimes these things can feel like tourist traps but this was not the case, it felt really genuine. The families were so kind and generous with their time, they cooked us amazing food and showed us their way of life, including a walk in the jungle to see rubber plants and many native foods. 

Tips for others would be to bring plenty of cash, for the market stalls along the way and for the beautiful handmade jewellery that some of the women in the longhouse make. And bring long pants or insect repellent for the jungle walk 😊 

This trip is something we will be talking about for a long time and I would 100% recommend this tour to anyone wanting a unique experience!

If you're reading this: book 2 nights instead. You won't regret it! And don't worry, the homestay is sooooo clean, bathroom is spacious, separated with toilet and shower. Shower is refreshing! Also, please prep gifts for the kids! I certainly regret not gifting something for them.

We had a wonderful time and our highlights were the trek up to the waterfall with Abbie, our guide,  who was amazing. Very kind, knowledgeable and full of interesting stories about Sarawaks history, culture and people. 
Our Longhouse home stay family were so welcoming and we were invited to a birthday party within the community. Everyone was so kind and generous, it was such an interesting experience in itself. A trip definitely worth doing, especially if you can get Abbie as your guide!

it was a very authentic experience, such a cute homestay and lovely people! :) apart from the great programme, it was also nice to just chill there. everything was simply perfect! :) and the food delicious as well! :)
